Liverpool star Joe Gomez has revealed his surprise at being named in the top 100 greatest players in the club's history, sending an emotional message after the unveiling.
The defender has been at Liverpool for 11 years, joining at just 18 as a promising prospect from Charlton Athletic after a breakout campaign. A versatile option at the back, who can play as a center-back and right-back, Gomez has made himself into a reliable squad option through the recent glory years, without being one of the main stars starting each week.
With 277 Liverpool appearances to his name, the 29-year-old has been involved in teams that have won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and a Club World Cup title.
While others during the past 11 years have taken the headlines, from Mohamed Salah to Virgil van Dijk, there is clearly a special place in the hearts of Liverpool fans for Gomez.
So much so that the defender was voted into the club's 'Greatest' series, which compiled the top 100 players to play for the Reds as voted by fans.
An official book has now been released with the rankings, titled 'Liverpool's Greatest: A Celebration of 100 Reds Stars', with Gomez revealing his surprise at being named alongside some icons through history.
He said in response: "I’ll be honest, it was a bit of a shock. But a massive, massive honor. I don’t take it for granted. It means a lot to me.
"I feel like being at this club this long, it’s obviously a massive part of my life. It’s something I’ll show my kids one day. Yeah, it means a lot.”
Although he hasn't been a standout star so far in his career, his years of reliable service have been clearly recognized by Liverpool fans.
It remains to be seen how much longer the 29-year-old will remain that reliable force for the Reds, as questions about his future will be raised over the coming months.
The defender has a contract that runs until the end of the season, at which point he could be available to leave as a free agent to a new club, with new surroundings.
It's unclear whether Liverpool will offer Gomez a new contract before that possibility, as the club has to weigh up his availability and injury concerns alongside the budget and potential targets in the transfer window.
It sets up an uncertain year for the star, but either way, his legacy has already seemingly been set.
