Phil Mickelson is definitely one of the best putters in the history of the game.

Sure, he hasn’t always been red-hot with the flat-stick, and he has missed some key putts at vital times in big tournaments.

However, when Mickelson was on with his putter, he was seriously good.

The six-time major champion’s famous forward-press enabled him to create an incredible roll on his ball.

He made some memorable putts throughout his career, none more so than when he rolled in his birdie attempt on the 18th green at Augusta National in 2004 to win his first Masters.

Of course, Mickelson has played alongside some of the best putters in the game during his time in the sport.

And now he has shared a couple of their valuable secrets with amateur golfers who are keen to improve on the greens.

Phil Mickelson shares two valuable secrets of the best putters in the world

Back in 2020, Mickelson was asked to share what he thinks is the key to improved putting.

The 45-time PGA Tour winner explained how there are two things that the very best putters in the world do every single time during their stroke.

“When they break their wrists, the face stays square, it’s just de-lofted. But it’s still aiming at the target. When they drop their hands, the face rotates more and they have to time it,” Mickelson explained.

“They all start the putter back with the heel. They never wanted the toe to open because they felt like they could never get it back to square.

“If they started it back with the heel, they could cover the ball and extend to the target.“

Phil Mickelson is explaining here how the two key things amateur golfers need to do in order to putt better are to hold their hands higher at address and to initiate the takeaway with the heel of the putter, rather than the toe.

This should enable more face stability and, in theory, improve the consistency of your contact when putting.
