The Philadelphia Phillies have several important decisions to make this offseason as they attempt to build a roster capable of making another deep postseason run. While much of the attention will center on the major league roster, Philadelphia could also have some work to do replenishing its infield depth throughout the minor leagues.

Alec Bohm, Luis Arraez and Edmundo Sosa are all eligible for free agency, potentially leaving the Phillies with multiple infield positions to address. Top prospect Aidan Miller figures to be an important part of the organization’s future plans, but Philadelphia could also use additional options behind him as it prepares for another season.

One potential option, however, is no longer in the organization’s plans for now.

Philadelphia Phillies Shortstop Prospect Elects Free Agency After Injury-Plagued Season

On Monday, Phillies’ shortstop prospect Erick Brito, who suffered a pair of significant injuries during this past season, elected free agency, according to the official transaction log.

Brito’s departure comes after a difficult season that began with a hand injury requiring surgery. The infielder underwent the procedure before the season, delaying his return to the field.

He subsequently worked his way through several levels of the Phillies’ minor league system before another injury brought his campaign to an early conclusion.

“In 2026, Brito opened the season on the IL after undergoing hand surgery and got off to a late start,” Chuck Hixson recalled for Philly Baseball News. “After short stints at Clearwater and Jersey Shore, he moved up to Double-A Reading only to wind up back on the IL with a forearm injury that ended his season in early July.”

What Latest Departure Could Mean For Philadelphia Phillies Infield Depth

Brito had already experienced some organizational uncertainty before his injury troubles this past season. He began the 2025 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, hitting .251/.341/.313 with a .654 OPS, before being moved down to Double-A Reading in July as the Phillies made room for more highly regarded prospects.

At 24, Brito still has time to find another opportunity and potentially work his way back toward the major leagues. His defensive versatility could make him an interesting minor league addition for another organization looking for inexpensive infield depth.

For Philadelphia, meanwhile, his departure adds another name to the list of potential minor league roster vacancies the front office will need to address. With several major league infielders also entering free agency, the Phillies have plenty of reasons to prioritize organizational depth this winter.
