Dalton Smith lands on Alberto Puello

Some more words from Dalton Smith to DAZN...

On how mentally challenging the fight was: “Look did you ever think I was going to vacate this belt to go a different route? Not a chance. I know how hard I have worked for this, and I wanted to bring it back home for every single person here.”

On the atmosphere: “Unbelievable. When I did my ring walk, I had that dream so many times and it gives me goose-pimples now. Honestly from the bottle of my heart, I can’t thank everybody enough for coming out tonight."

On who’s next: “Number one goal in my life was to become world champion and make history, the second was to sell out Hillsborough stadium. I had that carrot dangled out in front of me for so long, I had to block out the noise, stay professional, it was hard, and keep my eyes on the ball tonight."

Both men give it their all in that last round.

Smith counters brilliantly with a left hook after catching one of Puello's shots on the gloves.

Puello responds with another cracking shot into the midriff of Smith.

Then the Sheffield boxer rushes in, gets through with a right before the pair clinch.

Smith - bloodied under his right eye - lands with a right to the body but Puello fires back with a left hand.

The defending champion wheels away raising his hands in victory and jumps up on the ropes before his dad lifts him up.

There's a pretty big prize dangling in front of Dalton Smith tonight.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed discussions are taking place with Sheffield Wednesday about staging a major fight at Hillsborough.

American superstar Shakur Stevenson would be a dream opponent, while British rival Adam Azim is another possibility.

For Smith, a lifelong Wednesday supporter, headlining the stadium would be an extraordinary moment.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Alberto Puello has travelled to Sheffield with every intention of ruining those plans.

The Utilita Arena holds around 13,000 for boxing events. Part of the upper tier has been cordoned off and there are pockets of empty seats dotted around the venue. But there’s still a decent enough crowd in here, ready to give Dalton Smith a hero’s homecoming.

Smith has spoken in the past about his ambition to build a loyal, city-based following similar to that of Manchester legend Ricky Hatton.

That will take some doing, though. You feel Smith will need to come out of his shell a little more if he wants to get anywhere near the kind of fanatical support.
