Liverpool transfer moves proving a masterstroke as $125M duo prove worth to Andoni Iraola

Liverpool got over the line against 10-man Brentford at the weekend, and a couple of summer signings brought in for $125 million (£94 million) played a decisive role

As a significant group of Liverpool fans who had made the trip down to Brentford got off the last train back from London on Saturday, Lime St station was filled with the noise of one man's name being chanted.

To the same tune that Liverpool's traveling support has backed Alexander Isak this season, the words 'Jeremy Jacquet, Allez, Allez' filled the air. For just the third time this term, the Reds won in the Premier League — and Jacquet was central.

Starting alongside Virgil van Dijk, the 21-year-old has settled into life in the English game instantly, and it would be fair to assert that if he can stand up the physical challenge that Brentford presents, he can do it against anyone.

There were shaky moments — he was cautioned after cleaning out Kevin Schade following a poor pass — but in general, Jacquet was imperious once again.

The ex-Rennes man was dribbled past only once, and he won eight of his 13 ground duels — an impressive figure in the context of him being up against Igor Thiago.

When Schade was introduced to play up against Victor Munoz, Jacquet helped the Spanish winger through the game, and it was the young defender who was 'headbutted' by Yehor Yarmoliuk.

Any concerns about Liverpool losing Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid have long been discarded — Jacquet, though it remains early days, and Van Dijk has been quick to offer reminders of that, has been an upgrade.

Signed for a fee that could reach $83 million (£60 million) including add-ons, that price looks to be a bargain.

Munoz, too, is someone who looks to be a steal. At $46 million (£34 million), the former Real Madrid man looks ideally suited to the physical rigors of the Premier League. He has speed, sure, but he is also stocky and resilient.

The Liverpool number 23 was persistent in his performance against Brentford, scored an excellent goal, and constantly provided an outball. He won't play full-back very often, but showed his versatility by slotting in there too.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

"I think he was very good," Van Dijk said. "It was a great goal, and defensively, he was holding himself pretty well.

"With the long kicks, it is not easy to (challenge) Schade, who is very good in the air. But I think he did well and so did the rest of the team. He is very fast but he is a very hard-working player that has settled in well."

Understandably, there has been lots of talk about the big sums Liverpool has splashed on the likes of Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola of late, but not every signing has fitted into that bracket.

Munoz appears to have been a steal in the modern climate, while Jacquet already looks to be heading to the top.
