Week one of Will Wade's second go-round coaching the LSU men's basketball team was a success as his Tigers took care of business against Texas Southern 92-51 Friday night inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. LSU did more or less what a power conference team is supposed to do against a mid-major: win big, empty the bench, and stay healthy.
Ten Tigers took the floor for LSU and all ten players scored. LSU had six players score double digits, and Brice Dessert's nine points nearly gave the Tigers a seventh double-digit scorer. Saliou Niang and Abdi Bashir Jr. tied for the team lead with 15 points. Niang also grabbed 11 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games; Michael Ruzic also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.
Texas Southern put up a decent fight in the first few minutes, but LSU controlled the game for most of 34 minutes. LSU shot 57 percent overall and led by as many as 41 points. It could have been even more lopsided, but LSU only shot 5-22 (22.7 percent) from three and missed 10 free throws.
Friday's win was dominant, but it's too soon to say if this is a sign that LSU's ready to compete in the SEC. That won't come until next Saturday when LSU travels to Spokane to take on Gonzaga. Before heading west, LSU will be back inside the PMAC Monday night to take on Louisiana Tech.
