Leicester City announced earlier this season that their goal was to achieve promotion by hitting a minimum of 90 points. But that feels a world away right now.

The Foxes’ 2-2 draw to Stevenage leaves them 11th in League One after 13 games with 19 points. Russell Martin’s side have shown some signs of life in recent weeks, but it is still nowhere near where they want to be.

So, just how far away are they from reaching the 90-point target, and, is it realistic?

We're almost a quarter of the way through the season. Where do you think Leicester will finish at the end of the season and why? Champions? Play-offs? Midtable? Or even a relegation battle? 🤷‍♂️

Leicester are unlikely to hit their points target

Midlands football writer Dan Orme posted the Foxes’ current statistics and worked out their probability.

In his tweet, he revealed that Leicester would need to achieve 71 points from their remaining fixtures to hit the bare minimum of 90. That would require an average of 2.15 points per game, however, their current record is a mere 1.46.

There is some good news based on the fact that if Leicester are to go on a run that would see them average 2.15 points per game, they would finish second based on the rest of the league.

With a maximum of 99 points left to play for though, there is very little room for error and Martin’s side would need to win around 24 of their games. To put that into context, Leicester haven’t won 24 games in their past two league campaigns combined (18).

Leicester City stat Figure
Season points target 90 points
Points earned so far 19 points
Points still needed 71 points
Current points per game 1.46
Points per game required to reach 90 2.15
Projected final points at current rate Approximately 67 points
Points short of target at current rate Approximately 23 points

As mentioned there has been some turnaround. Leicester’s last five games have seen them average two points per game, winning three, drawing one and losing once. But, more is still required in order to reach the goal.

Sides like Sheffield Wednesday will improve after the appointment of Dave Challinor, Stockport County and Huddersfield Town look like promotion favourites and there also other challengers in the way of Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle.

It isn’t impossible, but it is going to require something special.
