Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has really caught the eye this week as new photos emerged of the WWE legend. Images shared on social media showed the 54-year-old looking every bit his age and more while on a film set.
The professional wrestler established himself as one of the sport's biggest stars in the late 1990s, ranking among the greatest WWE Superstars in history, but further enhanced his celebrity status when he turned his talents to Hollywood. His first film role was in The Mummy Returns (2001) and in the years since, he's starred in many money-making hits.
In 2025, Johnson received critical praise for his dramatic turn as MMA fighter Mark Kerr in the sports biopic The Smashing Machine. His latest role, however, appears to have him play a very different kind of character.
Despite being in his 50s, The Rock is reportedly set to play a 70-year-old man in Benny Safdie's new film "Lizard Music." As per Variety, the actor was spotted on set in Brooklyn on Tuesday, and he looked unrecognisably old.
The film, based on Daniel Pinkwater’s children’s book of the same name, follows a young boy who “stumbles upon strange lizard musicians on late-night TV, leading him to befriend a peculiar man with an elderly chicken.” The 'Chicken Man' character will be played by Johnson, while other cast members include Rachel McAdams, Colman Domingo, David Krumholtz, Jeff Goldblum, Alicia Silverstone and Regina Hall.
The WWE legend has worked with Safdie before, playing the lead role in the director's aforementioned debut, The Smashing Machine. Johnson said it was an easy yes to sign on for “Lizard Music,” noting that it only took “about 45 minutes” of convincing from Safdie. He also revealed that he shed 30 pounds of muscle to play the Chicken Man.
It's still in the early stages of production, however, with the film not set for release until Christmas Day 2027. Footage has now also emerged of the actor in New York.
It's not the first time Johnson has caused a stir with his body transformation for a role. His slimmed-down look made headlines in 2025, when the wrestler dropped a noticeable amount of muscle to play his part in The Smashing Machine. While ex-UFC fighter Kerr competed at heavyweight inside the Octagon, he wasn't overly muscular, which likely inspired The Rock to lose some mass.
