Michael Gannon has addressed the idea that Brendan Rodgers ‘stormed out’ of Celtic when he resigned last year.
It’s now been 12 months since the Irishman called time on his second Parkhead spell in one of the most eventful nights of news in the club’s modern history.
Rodgers’ departure was soon followed by a bombshell statement by Dermot Desmond which blasted him as ‘self-serving’ and ‘misleading’. The ex-Hoops boss has made no public comment on his exit or that statement since.
Such a vacuum of information on one side of a two-sided story has facilitated plenty of speculation around a departure that no one has all the details on.
Speaking on the Record Celtic Podcast, Gannon said: “The jungle drums were beating that afternoon. The talk was that he’d been sacked. It was the day after they’d lost to Hearts.
“He looked a bit crestfallen at Tynecastle on the Sunday. Actually, the previous Monday, there was a lot of talk about him being sacked after Dundee, because that was the famous Honda Civic line.
“We knew that tensions had been brewing, there had been certain briefings to people that he had been working his ticket, Brendan came back out and said that whoever did that should be sacked.
“All that kind of stuff, and tensions over the transfer dealings… and by the time it came to Monday and you hear the rumours that he’d been sacked, it’s credible and you run about trying to check it out and see if it’s true.
“It turned out that Brendan had actually resigned. He’d spoken to them that afternoon and said, ‘Enough’s enough. I’m off’.
“I don’t think it was a big bust-up. It wasn’t like a big falling out where he stormed out the office and said ‘That’s me, I’m off. It was just to say ‘that’s me, I’m gone’.
Rodgers has since spent the entirety of 2026 at Al-Qadsiah, who are competing for the title in the Saudi Pro League.
