Manchester United Eye 21-Year-Old Spanish Defender: Is £43m Too Much?

Manchester United transfer news starts with results, and this season’s results explain why the centre-back position is attracting attention. Michael Carrick’s side have made their worst start to a Premier League campaign since 1986, winning once in eight league games and sitting 16th. Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford, Chelsea won 2-0, and United have lost six of their 12 matches in all competitions.

The 3-2 comeback against Roma in the Champions League eased the pressure on Carrick, but it did not hide the structure problem. His 4-2-3-1 asks Diogo Dalot and the other full-backs to push high, which leaves the centre-backs covering wide spaces against cross-field transitions, and United have struggled to do that without individual rescue work.

Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt were meant to anchor the defence, yet neither has given Carrick consistency. Lisandro Martínez enters the final year of his contract after openly clashing with the hierarchy over direction, and Harry Maguire, 33, sees his deal expire in June 2027. Ayden Heaven, 20, started against Roma but remains raw and positionally vulnerable.

The summer made matters worse. United’s hierarchy signed no elite defender before the season started, and that caution has left Carrick short of depth.

Manchester United transfer news points to a Como defender

According to CaughtOffside, citing TEAMtalk, United have intensified their interest in Como’s 21-year-old Spanish centre-back Jacobo Ramon, valued at about £43m (€50m). He scored in Como’s 4-1 Champions League win over United, and United see him as a long-term partner for existing options, particularly with Martínez uncertain. Chelsea and Arsenal also hold interest.

Ramon is physical, composed and comfortable on the ball, with three goals in 12 appearances. His pace would help Carrick’s back line cover the space behind Dalot, and he moves better than Maguire. The current system would suit his presence, though his habit of wandering forward could expose a mid-block.

Should Manchester United pay £43m for Ramon?

Not on these terms. United need a centre-back with Ramon’s profile, because he can phase out Maguire and replace Martínez if he leaves. Real Madrid would collect half of any fee, and they could take him back in 2027 for £8m, which makes a £43m outlay look like an investment in someone else’s asset.

United should not enter a bidding war for a player whose future Madrid controls, and the cautious summer already cost them. Carrick needs a high-ceiling defender without third-party entanglements. Unless Madrid waive their 2027 rights, United should pivot to another defensive target.
