McLaren Is Selling 5 of Its Historic Race Cars So They Can Be Driven Again

The vehicles are expected to sell for between seven and eight figures each.

McLaren’s Historic Formula 1 Race Cars

McLaren Racing wants to see some of its finest cars back out on the track.

The reigning Formula 1 World Constructors’ Champions are teaming up with Tom Hartley Jnr to sell five historic vehicles from its archives. Each of the cars has been retained by the team since completing its last race and is meant to be driven.

Except for F1’s winningest team, Ferrari, no other constructor has proven to be as much of a force over the decades as McLaren. Not only has the team claimed 10 titles since entering the competition in 1966, but it has also counted some of its greatest talents—like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Lewis Hamilton—among its drivers. The team went more than a quarter century between its eighth and ninth titles but is back at the top of the sport thanks to the hard work of CEO Zak Brown and drivers Lando Norris, the current World Drivers’ Champion, and Oscar Piastri.

The quintet of race cars was used in races held between the 1991 and 2023. Up first, a pair of pair of 1991 MP4/6A cars, chassis nos. 4 and 7, that were driven by Senna and teammate Gerhard Berger during the former’s third and final championship-winning campaign. There’s also the MP4/27A, No. 1, from 2012, which helped push McLaren to a third-place finish.

Just as intriguing, and maybe even more so, are the more recent cars. There is the 2021 MCL35, No. 1, which was raced exclusively by Norris. That season saw the team claim its first Grand Prix win since 2012. There’s also the MCL37A, no. 3, from 2023. Not only did the car earn two podium finishes, finishing second at the Singapore and Japanese Grand Prix, but it was also driven by Brad Pitt at the Circuit of the Americas during the filming of F1. The movie star is said to have reached a top speed of 197 mph in the car.

“We have decided to part with these iconic McLaren Formula One cars because we feel that having them simply sitting in storage is a disservice to what they represent,” Brown said in a statement to Reuters. “These cars were built to be driven and raced, and we want to see them being used and enjoyed.”

It should be noted that the cars are being privately sold as opposed to auctioned off. Still, those eager to add one or more of these to their collection would be advised to reach out to Tom Hartley Jnr sooner than later. No price has been announced for any of the vehicles, but Reuters reports they are expected to command fees between $5 million and $10 million.
