Washington got some positive injury news on Monday as the Huskies head into their bye week.
Running back Trey Cooley, defensive tackle DeSean Watts, and edge rusher Ramzak Fruean all left early against the team's 38-26 win over Purdue due to injuries, but head coach Jedd Fisch told the media Monday that all three should be cleared to play against Nebraska on Halloween.
"Trey should be cleared to practice mid-week. My guess," Fisch said. "I haven't met with the doctors yet today. Yesterday he was not cleared to practice, but he does not have an injury that will hold him back from playing in a game a week from Saturday, and my impression is he doesn't have an injury that'll hold him back from practicing the second half of this bye."
Cooley sprained the AC joint in his shoulder, according to Fisch, initially incurring the injury the week before (whether in the game against Iowa or during practice was unclear), and took a helmet to the injured shoulder on the play that knocked him out against Purdue.
"Sounds like both of those guys will be good to go for Nebraska," Fisch said of Watts and Fruean. "Ramzak will probably miss this week of practice, and then will be cleared probably starting Saturday. I think Watts will probably have some form of individual and some walkthrough stuff this week and then be cleared for next Sunday's practice as well, but both will be cleared for the game."
Fruean left in the second quarter and was seen on Washington's sideline with a brace on his leg after the Purdue game, so the fact that he has avoided major injury is a major boost for the Huskies. Watts had to be helped off the field in the third quarter, but the nature of his injury was not clear.
Defensive tackle Kai McClendon and running back Ansu Sanoe will return to practice this week as well after missing Saturday's game with the flu. Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. is also cleared to practice "full-go" after missing Friday's game with a rib injury he suffered against Purdue, but Fisch did not commit to Williams as starting quarterback against Nebraska, citing the fact that the third-year passer is "still not fully medically cleared to go in the game".
That should get Washington to about as full-strength as they can be heading into Nebraska. Linebacker Xe'ree Alexander will miss his second straight game with a high ankle sprain and running back Jayden Limar is out with an elbow injury that is due to be re-evaluated on November 1. Four other Huskies - running back Jordan Washington, running back Quaid Carr, wide receiver Christian Moss, and safety CJ Christian - are out for the season.
