Walsall boss Lee Grant on ref chat after Swindon Town controversy

Aaron Drinan gave Swindon an early lead that could have been extended before the break, but Walsall came back in the second half, scored through Tai Sodje, and were aggrieved not to have had more.

Ian Holloway admitted after the game that The Saddlers should have had a penalty, and Grant spoke about his conversation with the officials after the game.

He said: “I want us to try and find that last little moment of quality, but in fairness, we actually did. We scored a good goal, we created a scenario where the goalkeeper should be sent off, but then he doesn’t get sent off.

“I have managed to, in the calmest way possible, go and speak to the officials afterwards, and I have to say that they were very respectful and are all really good people.

“We had a sit-down before I even spoke to the players, because I wanted to make sure that they were clear on how I felt, and I wanted to have a clear picture of why decisions were made.

“Obviously, I am not going to reveal the full details of a private conversation, but it is safe to say that my feelings have been backed up, but mistakes can happen.”

The first incident that frustrated Grant was a disallowed goal for Sodje, as he tapped in Aaron Pressley’s deflected effort.

He said: “I have watched it back and it is a goal, Pressley is in the stand celebrating, and Tai is stood a yard away with the ball over the line waiting for something to happen, and then nothing happened, so he put it in.

“It was actually quite difficult for the officials to come up with a reason as to why that wouldn’t be allowed, because he is onside, or at least in a level position and he has not interfered with a defender or the goalkeeper.”

The main moment of controversy came as Connor Ripley came rushing out after 82 minutes and brought down Sodje just inside the penalty area, and the goalkeeper came clean as he was walking off the pitch.

Grant said: “Ripley’s first statement to me as he came off the pitch was, ‘That was a red card and a penalty, wasn’t it?’

“He is being honest, Connor, and that is fine, as he got away with one, and they got it wrong.”
