Otley dominate as Aire-Wharfe stars collect their awards

They picked up three awards at the Aire-Wharfe League dinner, which was held in the Howard Suite at Headingley Stadium.

Alex Atkinson was the leading batter in the Premier Division with an average of 58.19, scoring 931 runs including a highest score of 131.

It is the third time that he has collected the Eddie Nelson batting trophy, while clubmate Adam Hughes picked up two awards at third-team level.

He won the N&J Threapleton Trophy as the leading Division One batter, also taking home the JC Clapham Trophy as the leading wicket-keeper with 13 victims – 11 caught and two stumped.

As skipper of the side, Hughes had already been presented with the Denys Bull Trophy as champions of Division One, while Josh Atkinson had previously been awarded the Naylor Jennings Trophy and Howard Stott Pennant for Otley winning the Premier Division first XI – for a record 20th time outright as a club.

In addition, Otley won the Twenty20 Cup, previously handed to skipper Charlie Parker, and the Eddie Nelson Memorial Shield for under-13s.

Ilkley also had a year to remember, winning the Anthony Birtwhistle Cup, where Tom Dover was man of the match, and Chappell Cup for second and third XIs respectively, Bradley Goodaire and Jack Winterbottom being the respective captains, the latter also being named as man of the match, while the former led them to the runners-up place in Division One.

Meanwhile, Addingham retained the Waddilove Cup, James Nixon having been previously presented with that trophy, Ricky Palacio being named man of the match.

Green Lane had a stellar year too, winning the Division Two title under the leadership of Daniel Husband, Benn Hallas picking up the E&N Holroyd Trophy as the leading bowler in that section.

At third-team level, clubmate Ashley Roberts won the Division One bowling award.

Menston collected two trophies – Archie Binley as the under-nine player of the year in the Yorkshire Cricket Festival competitions, while Matthew Atkinson was the leading second XI wicket-keeper, taking 28 victims – 19 caught and nine stumped – to lift the Harry McIlvenney Trophy.

Burley-in-Wharfedale picked up two junior player-of-the-year awards – Connor Dunphy at under-15 level (David Greenwood Trophy) and Harry Foley at Joe Lumb level (Eddie Nelson Trophy).

Horsforth matched them, with Lucas Taylor winning the under-10 award and Jamie Sinclair the under-14 award.

Young Scorer of the Year was Fred Manser (Horsforth Hall Park), while Sam Chapman was the leading bowler in the First Division, helping Rawdon to the championship under the captaincy of James Doidge.

Josh Rhodes (Ilkley) was the top second XI bowler in Division One, while James Hudson (Olicanian) was the leading batter in second XI Division Two, Swaraj Thakur (Guiseley) lifting the equivalent bowling award.

Albert Taylor (Leeds Modernians) was the top under-20 bowler on Saturdays, despite being in a struggling team.

Adel won the Burmah Oil Trophy for the combined points tally of first and second XIs, while Alwoodley won the Fair Play Trophy, being the only team with full marks.

Chief guest at the dinner, which was attended by 210, was former Yorkshire pace bowler Jack Brooks, who was interviewed by Radio Leeds’ Jonathan Doidge.
