Liverpool news: Bitter Brighton boss digs out Andoni Iraola as Kop finds new hero

Liverpool secured a vital victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield, prompting quite the reaction from Fabian Hurzeler

Andoni Iraola finally got a Premier League win at Anfield with Liverpool - it came at the perfect time.

A sixth Premier League goal of the campaign for Alexander Isak and a deflected strike from Florian Wirtz - which was deemed an own goal by Pascal Gross - secured a first league win at Anfield since a 3-1 home victory over Crystal Palace on April 25.

Not only has Iraola ended that worrying run, he has also dragged Liverpool into the top four, taking advantage of Chelsea's loss to Tottenham. But while Liverpool fought hard for the win, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler had a different view of the match.

Hurzeler was far from magnanimous in his assessment of the match. He believes his side were the only ones who created opportunities and tried to win, despite ending up on the losing side.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, when asked for his thoughts, the German replied: "I think everyone in the stadium saw that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game and therefore I have to praise my players.

"I think everyone in the stadium, and you as well, felt there was a missed opportunity for us, because it's not only after the goal or the goals they scored. Also, before they scored, we had one, two big chances and today I think it was just the difference that they scored, we didn't score.

"They kept a clean sheet because they defended well with their centre-backs, with full-back [Ronald] Araujo and with [Milos] Kerkez. I think they blocked a lot of shots. They really defended the box well. We didn't have that efficiency. We couldn't keep the clean sheet because we made easy mistakes, we lost some important personal duels."

Liverpool supporters who are wide-eyed in wonder at Ronald Araujo have thrown out one of football's most celebrated unwritten rules - never fall in love with a player on loan.

It's a saying as old as the game itself, yet the Anfield faithful could not resist cheering as Araujo threw himself, head first, in front of a point-blank shot to deny a clear scoring opportunity, despite the real danger of serious injury. Although he had one narrow escape, he took a blow to the face from Malick Yalcouye in the dying moments of the match while halting a counterattack, prompting another jubilant response from the home fans.

Araujo joined on loan from Barcelona during the summer window. The club does retain an option to purchase him for approximately £47m at the end of the campaign, though it remains far too soon to know whether they will commit the funds to securing him on a permanent basis.
