The Premier League season is well and truly underway, with seven matches of the campaign having been played so far. Despite their ongoing off-field situation, Manchester City remain imperious, with the Blues leading the way at the top of the table. Reigning champions Arsenal trail just behind, while high-flying Brighton have started the season on fire. But at the opposite end of the table, it tells a completely different picture.
Manchester United and Tottenham haven’t impressed so far, with the pair boasting just one victory in the league between them. Meanwhile, Fulham and Crystal Palace have been surprise strugglers, having both appointed new managers in the summer.
And with the defeats starting to rack up, the talk about the first managerial sacking of the season is gathering pace as well. Rather unusually, Pierre Sage threw his own name into the ring over the weekend following Crystal Palace’s 5-0 thumping away to Brighton.
The Frenchman hinted he could be shown the door in the coming weeks, replying: “I don’t know,” when asked if he’ll be given the time to turn their poor start to the season around.
But who do you think will be shown the door first? Have your say in our poll…
Another manager feeling the pressure will be Michael Carrick. His United side slumped to their sixth winless match in a row at the weekend, squandering a first-half lead away to rivals Leeds.
Ex-Red Devils ace Gary Neville issued a stark warning to his former team-mate after the 1-1 draw in Yorkshire. He told Sky Sports: "Fifth is a must for Michael Carrick to continue to grow and Manchester United continue to grow with investment.
"If they're 13th in January, he's got a problem because then you are what you are. Whereas I think it's still early enough, seven points from seven games, to say, 'okay, still early in the season'. You can't say that after 15 games.
"It has to change in the next few weeks: Bournemouth is really important and Chelsea away. And how he manages the games in between that.”
After another tricky assignment away to Como in mid-week, United return to Old Trafford on Sunday to play Bournemouth in the Premier League. Following that, it’s matches against Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa before the November international break.
