Analyzing What a Jonathan Taylor Trade Could Look Like for the Vikings

Could the Vikings bet it all on the three-time Pro Bowl back?

Here's what a potential trade for Colts RB Jonathan Taylor could look like for the Vikings this season. | USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

The Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline is fast approaching, and Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley will face some incredibly difficult decisions. With minimal input on the current roster after being hired in June, the coming weeks will be his first chance to shape the organization's present and future. While there are a few paths to choose from, one potential home run swing has become a dream scenario for many Vikings fans.

Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has quickly become a name to watch as a possible trade candidate after the firing of general manager Chris Ballard signaled a possible fire sale in Indianapolis. Luckily for Teasley and the Vikings, they’ll get a close look when Taylor and the Colts come to town this weekend.

But could the Vikings even pull off a move this big? Heck, is there even a need for it? Let’s break down what a deal could look like and if it’s worth pursuing.

A Vikings-Jonathan Taylor trade would come with a hefty price

Taylor is fresh off signing a two-year, $44 million extension in August that carried him through the 2028 season. Now, the Colts must decide on their long-term future.

As it stands, trading Taylor before June 1 would hit the Colts with over $7.5 million in dead money in 2026, per Spotrac. That dead money rises to $10 million in 2027 before dropping to $5 million in 2028. Simply put, trading Taylor wouldn’t remove him entirely from Indy’s books, but it would free up over $8.6 million in cap space this season that the Colts wouldn't have.

Now, Minnesota’s side of the equation comes into play.

According to Spotrac, the Vikings have $4.1 million in cap space available for 2026, far less than Taylor's current cap hit of approximately $16.19 million before any offsets. Teasley and executive vice president Rob Brzezinski would need to find creative ways to create more cap space through restructures, extensions, or trading away other players. Their projected $37.5 million in cap space for 2027 will likely increase once the NFL announces the final cap number for the year, but several impending roster holes will make things tricky.

Let’s say the financials can be worked out—now it’s time to talk trade compensation.

Acquiring a player of Taylor’s pedigree will not come cheap, and other suitors will likely only drive the price up further. Minnesota will likely need to offer its 2027 second-round pick to close the deal. There are clearly numerous hoops to jump through for any of this to work, but the question is: is it worth it?

Trading for Taylor helps the RB room now and later

With Aaron Jones off to the best start of his career and Jordan Mason returning from injury, a running back acquisition does not exactly seem like a top priority. But with Jones and Mason both in the final years of their current deals, finding a talented long-term upgrade now could prove to be the best decision. The announcement that Jones has been playing through a sprained MCL adds even more urgency to find stability at the position.

With Teasley fresh off a Super Bowl win in Seattle led by Kenneth Walker, I have a hard time thinking he doesn't at least make a call or two about Taylor. The ultimate decision will come down to his assessment of the 2026 Vikings. If he believes this roster can truly win it all, he may take the swing and go all in.

If his priorities are long-term roster construction, Teasley will likely retain his draft picks and see where the current roster can go.
