The No. 8 UCLA Bruins have a tall task early Saturday morning, as the undefeated Bruins will be on the road to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers after Minnesota nearly upset Indiana last weekend.
Saturday’s game will be just the fifth meeting in the two program’s history with the Bruins seeking for a change in their fortunes. Minnesota currently owns a 3-1 all-time advantage over UCLA including a win in the 1962 Rose Bowl.
The 1962 Rose Bowl was the first-ever game between the Bruins and Golden Gophers and Minnesota traveled to Pasadena and knocked off UCLA 21-3 in the Rose Bowl. Over 60 years later, the two teams are now Big Ten Conference rivals, with the Week 10 matchup the second-ever conference showdown between the two schools.
After the loss in the Rose Bowl, UCLA and Minnesota played two nonconference games in 1977 and 1978, with the Bruins falling 27-13 in 1977 before responding with a 17-3 a year later in Pasadena.
Fast forward to 2024, and a DeShaun Foster-led UCLA team fell at home 21-17 to a Minnesota team powered by quarterback Max Brosmer. Brosmer threw for a pair of touchdowns but more importantly, took care of the ball, as UCLA quarterback Ethan Garbers tossed three interceptions in the UCLA loss.
The Bruins are favored to get their first win over Minnesota since the 1970s, with UCLA entering Saturday’s game as 4.5 point favorites. The Bruin defense may feast against a struggling Golden Gopher offense but it’ll be up to Ty Dieffenbach and the UCLA offense to muster up some points against a middle-of-the-pack Minnesota defense.
