Joe Braithwaite scores the equaliser for Grantham Town in their 2-2 draw with Carlton Town

Joe Braithwaite netted his first goal since joining Grantham Town to earn the Gingerbreads a share of the spoils in Saturday's home match with Carlton Town.

The former Skegness and Newark Town defender scored the equaliser with 12 minutes remaining of the Northern Premier League Midlands Division contest.

It was enough to earn the Gingerbreads a hard-fought point in a 2-2 draw with their play-off chasing Nottinghamshire visitors.

Player-boss Mitch Griffiths said: "It was a really good point against a good side who finished in second place last season.

"I thought we more than matched them in a very tight game where there wasn't much in it because both sides had good spells.

"It was a really professional performance from us and we deserved the draw."

Grantham had taken the lead midway through the first half when Ryan Rushen converted from close range after Kacper Rajter had flicked on a long throw.

However, the Millers got back on level terms after 34 minutes when they pumped a free-kick into the penalty area and a header was cushioned into the path of Ash Chambers who lifted his finish over goalkeeper Jack Steggles and into the home net.

Carlton then got their noses in front just past the hour mark when the ball was worked out to Niall Hylton who hit a sweet finish into the far corner.

Grantham rallied and equalised with 12 minutes remaining when Braithwaite rose highest to head home from a set piece and the earn the home side a point.

Griffiths added: "I was really disappointed with the first goal which we conceded. We let them get back into a very tight game after doing what we had needed to do to get in front.

"It was frustrating and then some of our decisions for the next 10 minutes after the goal were poor to give them the upper hand again.

"It has been common theme this season because we had been really good for the first 30 minutes.

"We then kept going until the end like we always do after going behind and the desire was there which was why we got the equaliser."

The point leaves Grantham in 14th place in the 22-team division. They travel to Basford United on Saturday.

Grantham Town Supporters Club Lottery results: £200 H Oliver, £10 Steven Rooke, £10 Martin Elkington, £20 no winner (£30 rollover next week), £10 Rosemary Woodhall.
