Lando Norris has vowed to make "better decisions" in the aftermath of his controversial crash with teammate Oscar Piastri at the Singapore GP Sprint. In his preview of this weekend's Austin GP, the reigning world champion said he "takes responsibility for my mistakes."

With both Piastri and Norris in the top five on the last lap of the Singapore GP Sprint Race, the latter made an unfortunate move down the inside of Piastri at Turn 5 - knocking his Aussie teammate out of the race, while Norris could only finish P8.

Initially, Norris defended the collision, claiming the move was on and that he had a right to make it. McLaren, however, were far from pleased as a furious team principal, Andrea Stella, labelled the incident as "simply not acceptable."

The next day, Norris had changed his tune, offering Piastri strategic support during the Grand Prix - they finished P4 and P5, respectively - and apologising to the team for the Sprint incident. He said: "I can't attempt what I did, I should never have attempted it in the first place, even if the move was on."

Now, ahead of the Austin GP, Norris has reiterated his vow to make "better decisions," while also taking responsibility for the collision with Piastri. He said: “Everything we do only matters if I perform well on the track. I take responsibility for my mistakes, and I learn from them.

"This team is my motivation every weekend, and my aim is to repay the hard work everyone puts in by improving, making better decisions, and representing the team in the best possible way.”

McLaren confirm 'modest' Austin upgrades as Red Bull close in on P3

While McLaren try to put the Singapore GP weekend behind them, they'll be concerned with the difficult triple header just gone, in which they only secured 33 points in total. Meanwhile, rivals Red Bull have made clear progress since the summer break, and Max Verstappen's two consecutive victories at Malaysia and Singapore mean the Milton Keynes team trail McLaren's third place in the Constructors' by only seven points heading to Austin.

“After a difficult triple-header, we take the lessons learned from both our performance and execution and put them into action,” said team principal Stella. “In Formula 1, success is never guaranteed - so our response is to keep building, keep developing, and keep pushing forward together as one team.”

The papaya team have also confirmed they will be bringing upgrades to the US GP, although Chief Designer Rob Marshall claims it is a "modest selection" aimed at improving braking reliability and performance issues. The team will also bring small floor changes to test during the weekend.

Ahead of the Austin weekend, Marshall said: "We have all seen how difficult it is to predict the relative performance of the top teams over the last five or six races. Obviously, there are many factors in play here: cars being upgraded, cars suiting and drivers liking certain circuits among other factors.

"The last few races have not been great for us, but I think we’re getting stronger again and Austin is probably a better circuit for our car."
