Aston Villa failed to claim successive home league wins after drawing 1-1 with Fulham at Villa Park.
Nicolas Jackson bagged his fifth goal in as many games to open the scoring in the first half, but Zion Suzuki dropped a clanger to gift Fulham an equaliser after the hour mark.
It was Fulham who carved out the first chance of the match, with Alex Iwobi unable to keep his effort down from inside the box after being picked out by Gonzalo Garcia on the right.
Villa captain John McGinn squandered the chance to open the scoring in the 16th minute when he took responsibility from the spot after referee Sam Barrott penalised Sander Berge for handball following a VAR review.
With Ross Barkley and Emi Buendia - who have both scored penalties for Villa this season - on the bench, McGinn stepped forward but rattled the crossbar.
The Cottagers continued to threaten in the first half and would have taken the lead if it had not been for an outstanding reflex save from Suzuki, who stretched out to tip Oscar Bobb’s effort over the bar when he looked beaten.
Villa made Fulham pay for failing to make the most of their chances in front of the Holte End, as Jackson scored his eighth goal in all competitions for the club. The goal came following a mistake by Timothy Castagne, allowing Johan Manzambi to pick out Jackson in the final third. With plenty of work still to do, however, the striker kept his cool and finished with aplomb.
Fulham started the second half stronger than Villa and deserved to equalise before Suzuki’s error. Bobb hooked a cross towards the back post, where Iwobi should have scored, but his header was straight at Villa’s goalkeeper. Victor Lindelof then made an excellent block to deny Garcia from close range.
From the resulting corner, taken by Iwobi, Suzuki failed to hold on to the ball and dropped it over his own goal line.
Villa will now prepare for their trip to Barcelona in the Champions League, before they return to Premier League duties on Sunday against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Zion Suzuki
Suzuki made a top save to prevent Fulham from taking the lead shortly before Villa's opener. He looked beaten when Bobb flashed the ball towards goal, but somehow tipped it over the bar. In the sixth minute, he created Villa's first opening, playing the ball to Cash on the right wing before the full-back found Alysson inside the box. Although he denied Bobb in the first half, he dropped a clanger in the second, allowing Fulham to equalise. Life as a goalkeeper. 5
Matty Cash
Cash collected his fifth booking of the season, meaning he will miss Villa's trip to Old Trafford next weekend. Won five of his six ground duels tonight. 6
Victor Lindelof
Lindelof made a crucial block to deny Garcia from close range, but Villa then conceded from the resulting corner. 6
Pau Torres
Torres nearly doubled Villa's lead when Maatsen's volley deflected off him and towards goal, but Leno saved well. Headed wide late on as Villa searched for a second. 6
Ian Maatsen
Maatsen had a battle on his hands against Bobb, who is a tricky winger, but he didn't shy away from duels and stuck to his task. Like his teammates, he became sloppy in possession in the second half. 5
Boubacar Kamara
Kamara won eight of the nine ground duels he contested and kept the ball moving well. He has improved after a slow start to the season following his return from injury. 6
Leon Goretzka
Goretzka made his first Premier League start this evening. His first action was to power forward with the ball at his feet before he was brought down by Fulham striker Garcia. It was his header that led to Villa's penalty in the first half. 5
Alysson
Alysson has a natural ability to glide infield from the right wing and cause problems with his close control. He faded in the second half and was taken off after Fulham's goal. 5
Johan Manzambi
Manzambi played off the left and came inside to create and combine with teammates. He did just that after a mistake from Castagne, allowing Manzambi to pick out Jackson before he scored. It's now three assists for the Swiss international in the league this campaign. 6
John McGinn
McGinn played more centrally in the number 10 role tonight. He smacked the bar with his penalty, failing to hand Villa the lead in the 16th minute. He curled a lovely ball into Jackson's path in the 48th minute, but the striker's effort was saved by Leno. 5
Nicolas Jackson
Jackson has already scored five league goals this season, with each one demonstrating different facets of his game. This time, he showed excellent footwork to create the opportunity to move the ball onto his right side before stroking it past Leno. Affengruber was booked earlier in the first half after bringing Jackson down when the Villa forward used his pace to get in behind. 7
