Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has been showering praise upon Victor Munoz for his start to life at the club, while claiming that he hasn't received the affection that he deserves so far.
It comes after yet another impressive performance for the Spanish winger, who helped instigate a comeback against Brentford with an impressive goal to equalize in the game.
That finish was the 23-year-old's second strike of the season, adding to his goal against Nottingham Forest, as well as the assist he picked up in the opening game of the season against Newcastle. Munoz has brought an energy largely lacking from the Liverpool frontline in recent seasons, with pace to burn when required.
Given his age profile and ability so far, there is a belief that the forward can continue to progress and become an important player for the team.
However, despite an impressive start so far on Merseyside, it seems as though Munoz's performances may have gone slightly under the radar when surrounded by the big-money forwards around him in the team.
For that reason, former captain Gerrard believes he needs more praise. Speaking on The Overlap daily, he said: “The first goal was a beauty, Munoz. Still had work to do; it was a lovely pass from Wirtz, but the first goal chopping in, the Ronaldo-type chop in, and then to finish on your left foot was fantastic.
"And he’s been fantastic for Liverpool. He hasn’t had enough praise or credit, maybe because a lot of people are talking about Wirtz and Bradley Barcola.
"But he came in for £40 million [$53 million], Munoz, off the back of winning the World Cup with Spain, and he has been outstanding, and a breath of fresh air.”
There is still a long way for Munoz to go this season to prove he has been a quality addition, but the early signs suggest Liverpool has signed a potential gem for a bargain transfer fee.
Considering the many millions spent, the ability to go and find someone who can be a valuable part of the squad without worrying about their ability or the price tag could prove to be smart business that has been lacking at times in recent seasons for the Reds.
“Once you have a player, you really understand what he gives to the group," Iraola told the press on Munoz, ahead of the match with Villarreal in midweek, displaying the quality he has seen.
"Attitude-wise, I think he is ready to help in whatever position we need him. He is playing right, left, the other day he played right-back. I think he is a player with hunger. He hasn’t played professionally in a big club like Liverpool but he has been in the academy of Barcelona, has been in the academy of Real Madrid, has trained with those teams. He knows the level that is required in those teams.
"Also with the national team he is having experience. So, he is a player that is adapting really well, yes.”
Liverpool will hope this can translate into consistent output, but the early signs are of a player contributing well after making the switch.
