Manchester United’s recruitment strategy has increasingly focused on identifying young players who could become important figures at Old Trafford over the coming years.
However, signing promising teenagers is only the first step, with the club also needing to provide a clear route into senior football if they want to retain their most exciting prospects.
That challenge becomes more complicated when established players occupy key positions and academy talents are left waiting for opportunities.
United’s problems at left-back have made the situation particularly interesting, with injuries exposing a lack of reliable specialist cover.
The club invested in a promising Paraguayan defender with first-team experience in South America, but his development in England has so far taken place largely away from the senior spotlight.
With another transfer window approaching, his patience could soon be tested.
Manchester United could face a January exit request from Diego Leon if the club cannot provide a clear pathway into the first team, according to comments from his agent, Renato Bittar, reported by ABC Deportes on X.
The Paraguayan left-back joined United from Cerro Porteno in July 2025 after turning 18, arriving in England with considerable expectations following his breakthrough in his homeland.
He had already accumulated 33 senior appearances for the Paraguayan club before moving to Europe, convincing United to invest in his long-term potential.
However, Diego Leon has yet to make his competitive senior debut for the Red Devils.
He featured 20 times for United’s Under-21 side during his first season, gaining experience in English football while waiting for an opportunity to train and compete regularly at the highest level.
Bittar has now made it clear that his client’s next move will depend on the club’s plans for his development.
“If there isn’t a plan to break into the first team between December and January, we’ll look for a way out for him.
“A loan somewhere where he can compete, get playing time, and return to Manchester,” he said.
The agent indicated that a temporary move would be the preferred solution rather than a permanent departure from Old Trafford.
He also suggested that the Championship or another European league could provide the competitive environment León needs.
“The Championship is an option, as are other European leagues, but we don’t want to leave here.
“He’s performing well with the U21 team, he’s training well, and his physical condition is excellent,” Bittar explained.
The timing is notable given United’s continuing problems at left-back.
Luke Shaw has struggled with injuries throughout his career, while Patrick Dorgu has also been sidelined this season.
Dorgu can operate at left-back, but he has frequently been used in more advanced positions, leaving United short of natural alternatives when both players are unavailable.
That situation could appear to offer Leon an opening, although an injury crisis does not automatically guarantee a young player will be promoted.
United must decide whether he is ready to contribute immediately or would benefit more from regular senior football elsewhere.
