Andoni Iraola reverted to his strongest XI following the midweek Carabao Cup, but Trey Nyoni was among those to keep his place and therefore get his first league start.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Victor Munoz were able to return to the bench, while Cody Gakpo started for a fourth consecutive game, with Bradley Barcola on the left wing.
After a fairly positive opening, Arsenal begun to get more control of the game and Liverpool did themselves no favours in playing out from the back, which ended with Rice crossing for Havertz to finish at the back post.
It was a surprisingly open game with both teams having good chances. Arsenal twice could have extended their lead, while Liverpool had opportunities with Barcola and Isak.
The Reds pushed for the equaliser, responding well to being behind, and hit the bar through a Wirtz free kick and Mac Allister headed over a Kerkez cross.
Half-time: Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
Liverpool were bright again after the break, pushing for the equaliser. Arsenal’s theatrics continued to be bought by the referee, though.
A frustrated Anfield responded and urged the Reds on, with Szoboszlai and Ngumoha introduced from the bench to add more urgency.
For all the effort, Iraola’s side struggled to create chances and only a superb save from Alisson to deny Tzolis kept it at 1-0.
Araujo had a shot blocked in the 77th minute – which was actually the Reds’ first shot on target.
The crowd grew increasingly frustrated by the referee allowing Arsenal to get away with acting like it’s a non-contact sport.
Iraola made a brave call with ten minutes to go, bringing on Munoz at right back, Tsimikas at left back, and Koumas for Wirtz.
Despite their best efforts, the Reds struggled to break down Arsenal’s organised defensive setup.
Liverpool’s effort couldn’t be faulted in what was ultimately a frustrating defeat.
