A couple of wins has seemingly changed the narrative surrounding Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs have been on an upward trajectory since the Premier League resumed after the September international break. After a credible point at Manchester United, Roberto De Zerbi’s side have secured back-to-back wins against Coventry City and Chelsea. As a result, they have moved out of the bottom three into the safety of mid-table and are now within touching distance of a top-six spot.
There has been speculation surrounding the future of Roberto De Zerbi after Tottenham’s slow start to the season. The Italian was backed heavily in the transfer market after helping the club secure top-flight status, but a six-game winless start quickly turned a certain section of the fans against him.
Following back-to-back wins, the mood has certainly changed around N17. The latest Opta Supercomputer projections predict the North London club will end up 11th, but that is already much higher than what was predicted just a few weeks ago.
Liverpool great Steven Gerrard thinks Tottenham are just two signings away from challenging for the Premier League title. Now, Harry Redknapp has made his prediction on where his former club will finish at the end of the season. The Englishman is adamant the Lilywhites will finish in the top six, backing De Zerbi to turn the club’s fortunes around.
“He will turn it, yeah. The players they’ve got, they’ve spent a fortune, brought good players in. He’s got a squad there that I keep saying will finish in the top six and I still think they will,” Harry Redknapp said on the Overlap Daily.
Redknapp’s belief in De Zerbi turning the club’s fortunes around is massive, highlighting the work that the 47-year-old has done since arriving in late March. He has been backed to the hilt by the club’s hierarchy, and after a tough start, the team is starting to take shape under the Italian’s guidance.
With Spurs ranking second in the Premier League for average ball possession at 61.0% and controlling proceedings in big away encounters, the structural foundation of the team has earned extensive respect. There is balance in midfield as well, with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes dominating Chelsea with and without the ball. The defence is becoming more compact and robust, and there appears to be cohesion in attack.
But the most important thing is consistency. If De Zerbi can manage the squad well and keep the majority of his players fit and firing, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Tottenham finish in the top six.
