The Golden State Warriors have had a rough start to the 2026-27 NBA regular season. After suffering a 111-108 loss against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night, the Warriors now sit at 0-2.
However, while Golden State continues searching for its first victory, rookie Yaxel Lendeborg has found himself at the center of another controversy. His latest comments about Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić have reignited an already heated debate, and NBA fans aren’t holding back.
Following Friday’s loss, Lendeborg was asked by a reporter about his previous remarks criticizing Dončić after facing him in his NBA debut against the Lakers. The Warriors rookie responded by questioning why his comments had received so much scrutiny.
“He gonna say what he wanna say, I’m gonna say what I wanna say. I’m not afraid to talk to nobody; he’s not Michael Jordan, like c’mon now. It’s fun trash talk. I felt like I did take it overboard in the media, but it is what it is,” Lendeborg said during the postgame interview.
As clips of the interview circulated online, reactions from some fans soon followed. However, some fans weren’t particularly interested in revisiting his criticism of Dončić.
Lendeborg’s original comments came after facing Dončić in his NBA regular season debut. He said he had respected the Lakers star from watching highlights of him dominating opponents, but that experiencing it firsthand changed his view.
“I had a lot of respect for him [because] I didn’t really watch the NBA much. I just watched highlights and seen him kill people. But being in it firsthand and seeing all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect,” Lendeborg said after the game against the Lakers.
He stressed that his frustration wasn’t about fouls being called but about Dončić complaining throughout the entire game, calling the behavior “awful” and “weak.” While those remarks initially sparked controversy, his latest response has left some fans wondering why the subject continues to receive attention.
“What a loser! He’s still going on about this! Another L tonight, btw, 0-2,” wrote one user, while another user said, “Let’s go ahead and wrap this [expletive] up. Trash talking happens in hoops, my goodness.”
Lendeborg had kind of a productive individual performance against Memphis. The Warriors rookie finished with 18 points in 37 minutes, shooting 4-of-11 from the field, including 1-of-3 from the 3-point range.
He also converted 9 of his 12 free-throw attempts while adding 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Despite those contributions, Lendeborg couldn’t help Golden State secure its first victory of the season.
Some fans argued that the rookie should be more concerned about helping the Warriors win games than continuing to discuss Dončić.
“Lost to the [expletive] Grizzlies and the first thing on his mind is Luka,” said one user, whereas another one wrote, “Bro is still dragging this? I can’t wait to hatewatch him until he retires.”
With Golden State now having a poor start, Lendeborg will have opportunities to shift the conversation back to his performances. For now, though, his criticism of Dončić continues to follow him, even when the Lakers superstar isn’t on the court.
