Tottenham Hotspur showed great ambition and intent during the summer transfer window, signing as many as 10 players to bounce back from a disastrous last season. However, two months into the season, the club’s transfer business is starting to be criticised in several quarters.
Many have questioned Spurs’ decision to let go of talented players such as Will Lankshear, Luka Vuskovic and Djed Spence. As far as Will Lankshear is concerned, the 21-year-old made the switch to Middlesbrough in search of regular first-team football and further development. The move to Middlesbrough has worked out very well so far for the England Under-21 international, who has netted ten goals in 13 appearances.
Lankshear scored his tenth goal of the season in midweek in Middlesbrough’s 3-2 win over Stoke City in the Championship. Former striker Sam Parkin praised the youngster for his impressive one-touch finishing ability vs. Stoke City.
Lankshear has become an instant fan favourite at the Riverside Stadium. He is the current top scorer in the Championship, with the centre-forward spearheading Middlesbrough’s promotion push under manager Kim Hellberg.
This has led to the Tottenham fans wondering if the 21-year-old could have been a better option up top instead of Dominic Solanke. Now, Darren Bent claims his former club were being snobbish by letting Lankshear leave in the summer, with the talkSPORT pundit convinced that the English centre-forward will be in the Premier League sooner rather than later.
“I just think sometimes there’s a big club snobbery. They’re Spurs, they’ve got all the money in the world,” Darren Bent said on talkSPORT Drive.
“I’ve got no doubt whatsoever that if Middlesbrough get promoted or whoever goes up or there’s a team there, he’ll be playing in the Premier League. He is more than good enough.”
When asked what has impressed him the most about Lankshear at Boro thus far, the former Tottenham star added:
“He’s a big, physical powerhouse. Good movement, good finisher, composed. What I like about him is he scores all types of goals. He’s always there or thereabouts. You get some strikers that score a lot of goals, but they haven’t got that sense of where the ball’s going to drop.”
It is a great irony that while Spurs are finding it difficult to put the ball in the back of the net, Lankshear is flourishing with Boro in the Championship. He has reached double figures for goals already, outscoring the entire De Zerbi-managed side.
However, De Zerbi has no regrets in letting go of the English talent, insisting last month that Spurs have enough firepower to score goals. Interestingly, the Lilywhites have retained matching rights and a sell-on clause on any future sale, ensuring they have some say over the striker’s next move, but for now, the fans must be lamenting the club’s decision to give up on Lankshear so early.
