According to reports, Liverpool are now stepping up their move for Fenerbahce star Archie Brown after the loss to the Turkish side.
The talented full-back was one of Fenerbahce’s most impressive performers as they beat Liverpool 3-2 in the Champions League group phase on Wednesday night.
The 24-year-old, who previously had spells at Derby County and West Brom, grabbed a goal and an assist for Fenerbahce, and he could secure a big move elsewhere in the coming months.
The versatile left-back has been heavily linked with a potential return to England over the past few months, and Andoni Iraola‘s side are said to be stepping up their interest.
Liverpool have had issues at full-back over the past couple of seasons, with the club struggling to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold and Milos Kerkez failing to live up to expectations after joining as Andy Robertson’s long-term successor.
Now, our colleagues at TEAMtalk are reporting that Liverpool are ‘accelerating their interest’ in signing Brown amid competition from several sides across Europe.
And the report claims Liverpool are boosted by Brown’s stance on a potential move to the Premier League.
They claimed:
‘There is also a belief among sources that Brown has ambitions to return to English football and test himself in the Premier League at some stage in his career.
‘At 24, he is approaching an important stage of his development and has already demonstrated that he can perform on the European stage.’
On the loss to Fenerbahce, Iraola admitted that his side needed to “defend better”.
“It’s [a feeling of] frustration, because it’s a difficult place to come here and to play and we were for the most part of the game thinking, ‘okay, we can win this one.’ But obviously it hasn’t happened,” Iraola said.
“We have conceded, especially the first goal and the third goal – the second one is a rebound – but the wall, I don’t think we set it properly and the last one Muriqi jumps and wins the ball against three of our defenders, it’s something that definitely we have to defend better.”
On his team selection, Iraola explained: “We’ve done this not just today. We’ve been doing it all season and all the games we’ve played midweek.
“I think we’ve been changing at least four, five, six, seven players. Because of the schedule that we have, it’s impossible to maintain with always the [same] starting XI. I think we have been dealing well with these rotations.
“I trust the squad to sustain the level. I don’t think it was the main reason why we lost, I think some of the players that didn’t play on the weekend have played a good game.
“We have to look more at how we conceded the goals [and] the reason why we didn’t win because after I think we had good moments, especially on the ball where we could score our two goals.”
