Around 120 fans attended the Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club on Monday night, with recruitment, transfer policy, communication and the club’s ambitions and strategy among the issues raised.
Per Celtic's statement on what transpired, O’Neill was joined by interim chairman Brian Wilson, chief executive Michael Nicholson, chief financial officer Chris McKay and other club officials for the two-and-a-half-hour question-and-answer session.
Wilson admitted the Celtic hierarchy had been prepared for tough questioning.
He said: “We didn’t expect an easy ride and didn’t get one, but the meeting was conducted in a constructive and mutually respectful way and the messages delivered by supporters will be taken on board and learned from.”
Supporters from Greenock, Port Glasgow, Gourock, Johnny Doyle, Port Glasgow Hibs and Largs clubs were among those represented.
Nicholson also welcomed the opportunity to hear directly from fans and insisted everyone involved shared the same desire to see Celtic succeed.
He said: “Everyone in the room wants the best for Celtic and that was evident.
“We are grateful for supporters’ input and look forward to continuing to meet with supporters as we work on improving communication and engagement in the weeks and months ahead.”
Celtic say further details on the club’s new Celtic Connect engagement initiative and future fans’ forums will be announced soon.
The Greenock gathering followed recent meetings with the Affiliation of Registered CSCs in Glasgow and the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters' Clubs in Cork.
