Staplegrove beat Chard Town 5-0 in wet Saturday conditions

On a wet, blustery Saturday (October 24), Chard travelled to Staplegrove for a local derby.

As 3pm approached, the weather didn't improve.

From the kick-off, Chard went on to the attack, but conditions weren't helping their style of football.

On 26 minutes, Jason Contreras was injured and looked very uncomfortable, but managed to continue.

After 36 minutes, Staplegrove were awarded a free kick, harsh as the pitch was very wet.

A powerful shot was deflected into the bottom corner.

Jason Contreras didn't have a chance.

As half time approached, losing 1-0 was acceptable.

With a minute left of the first half, Staplegrove were awarded a penalty, the foul was after the ball had gone out of play.

It was a well-taken penalty, then from the restart, Staplegrove attacked and scored again, making it 3-0 at half time.

Changes were made at the start of the second half.

Jacob Manley went in goal.

Luca Manley, Conor Fielder and Tom Boyland were replaced by James Boyland, Harry Crittenden and Tom Redwood, purely a tactical change.

The change made a difference as more chances were created, but Chard still had no attempt on goal.

Just after the hour, Ryan Mason was replaced by Owen Abbott, but the game was over by then.

Staplegrove weren't finished, though; they made it 4-0 with 5 minutes left, then a cheeky lofted ball over Jacob in the final minutes made it 5-0.

A bad day for Chard, but Staplegrove were clinical and coped with the conditions better.

On to next week; Chard are at home to North Somerset side Congresbury.

Kick off at Zembard Lane 3pm.

On Tuesday night, the U18s were due to welcome Sherborne U18s to Zembard Lane.

A spokesman for the club said: “We are looking for sponsors for this game and all the remaining U18s home games, contact us for more information.”
