As Texas continues to approach a true must-win game against Ole Miss, it’s time to break down the Longhorns that could loom large. Colin Simmons is officially doubtful for the game, leaving a massive void on the defense. Not only will multiple defenders have to step up but the offense will have to give the defense more reprieve without their superstar.
Here are the six Longhorns that will need to put together strong performances for Texas to end their skid:
Simmons’ injury is getting all the attention but Hollywood Smothers is currently questionable for the game. He’s reportedly nursing a shoulder injury and while he’s likely to play, it’s unknown how much he can be used. That’ll leave more on Derrek Cooper’s shoulders, who was not 100% last week but has shined when in. Texas is 28-0 under Steve Sarkisian when they outrush the opponent, so Cooper and Brown will be vital to deliver the Longhorns a win.
One of the few constants in the Texas offense has been Ryan Wingo. In the last three games, Texas has scored 41 of their 61 points in the 12(out of 39) drives Wingo’s touched the ball. The quick screen game will be vital to avoid the blitz, meaning Wingo needs to lead the way, especially early on. He’s capable of changing this game, as he did against Vanderbilt last season, if Texas can give him space to work early.
Everyone is focusing on the possible change at QB but there could be a change coming on the IOL as well. Connor Robertson and Brandon Baker have struggled mightily in pass protection and there could be a change to be made. No matter who’s out there, they’ll need to give Manning more time in the pocket than they have recently. Texas avoiding negative plays is a must in this game and the IOL is the key to that goal.
Colin Simmons and the true freshman Richard Wesley will be on the sideline for this game, leaving pressure on Umeozulu. He and Lance Jackson are likely to get the start and will have to corral one of the most elusive QBs in the country. Umeozulu does bring upside as a pass rusher and this is the game it’ll have to show. Chambliss would be tough to handle with Simmons but without him, Umeozulu will need a breakout performance.
If there is another possible answer to Simmons absence it’s Brad Spence. He’s capable of playing as an edge rusher and brings the experience needed for this type of game. He can also be an answer in the pass rush, allowing him to play the dynamic role Simmons played on 3rd downs. Slowing Lacy and the Rebels run game is a must and Spence will need a good performance for that to happen.
On the backend, it’s all about slowing down Deuce Alexander. He’s the stiffest challenge Texas has faced since Jeremiah Smith, who had a very productive day. Littleton, alongside Mascoe and Philllips, will need to keep Alexander from changing this game. Not to mention Littleton’s importance in the quick passing game and run game is paramount. He’ll need to continue his high-level of play(and maybe add another TO) this weekend.
