Unbeaten start continues for Lichfield Hockey Club's women

LICHFIELD Hockey Club's women continued their fine start to the season as they got the better of Nottingham Trent University 2nds.

The newly-promoted students sat just a point behind the unbeaten visitors in the table.

Lichfield attacked from the starting whistle but, as expected, the hosts were quick to close down the ball carrier and pressed very high up the pitch.

After a scoreless first quarter, the second was a different story with the visitors stepping up a gear and getting a number of D entries and short corners.

It was from one of these that the ball was stopped on the line by a foot, allowing Ella Delderfield to convert the resulting penalty stroke.

With the home team on the back foot, Lichfield pushed further, sending balls high to the forwards. This eventually paid off when Kym Shergill sent a ball through for Ellie Doubleday who showed some excellent pace and individual skill to slot the ball into the goal.

The second half saw the city women continue to control the game and defend resolutely.

Lichfield went close to extending their lead in the final quarter through some good short corner routines, but the university goalkeeper was able to keep them out.

At the other end, the visitors dug deep to keep their clean sheet and keep themselves top of the table.
