Esteban Ocon has revealed that Lewis Hamilton was only one of two F1 drivers to show him support after he recently lost his seat at Haas.
Ocon confirmed that he would not be driving for the team in a statement at the end of September, with Ferrari junior driver Rafael Camara having since been confirmed as a Haas driver for 2027.
One seat remains up for grabs ahead of next year, but Ocon needs to look elsewhere if he wants to stay in F1.
Discussing his interactions with his fellow drivers since the news was confirmed that he would lose his seat, Ocon revealed that only Lance Stroll and Hamilton had shown him any support.
“Lance [Stroll] came to speak to me, for example. But I didn’t receive any messages from anyone," Ocon explained to the media, via PlanetF1. “They haven’t texted me - supportive in the press. It’s fine. It’s not the end anyway.
“I’m not calling for any support from any drivers or whatever. That’s not what I need. It’s a difficult world for everybody in a way.
“We are all living in that same thing. If you don’t perform for three races, you are the worst. If you perform in three good races, you are the best. So, that’s the difficulty of the sport.”
“Lewis came to me actually in Austin,” Ocon continued.
Hamilton and Ocon worked together at Mercedes, where Ocon was previously a junior driver as well as test driver for the Silver Arrows.
“We chatted a little bit about the situation and how things went, but nothing really to say much more."
Asked if it was nice of Hamilton to make that effort, he concluded: "For sure. Yeah, definitely.”
Hamilton was asked about this interaction when he himself spoke to the media in Mexico City, with the seven-time champion revealing he felt a discussion in person felt like a better option than a text.
“I’m not going to say what I said because it’s private and I didn’t text him,” he confirmed to the media. "I didn’t know about the text situation, but I thought it would be better to see him in person. I think he’s one of the nicest guys here."
Hamilton continued, labelling Ocon a 'charming' young man and stating that he will be sad to see him leave the sport.
“It’s just sad to see him leave because I think he’s in a very talented environment. I think he deserves to be here," the seven-time champion concluded.
“But when one door closes, it opens up new opportunities for something even better. I know whatever else he’s got to do, he’s going to do it. He’s a great character.”
