Draymond Green is one of the few NBA players who have spent their entire careers with the same franchise. Since entering the league in 2012, Green has been a key part of the Golden State Warriors’ success, helping them win multiple championships alongside Stephen Curry.
However, despite everything he has achieved, his aggressive behavior on the court has often landed him in controversy. And now, former NFL player Emmanuel Acho has explained why Green’s altercations have become the first thing he remembers about the Warriors veteran.
During a recent episode of the “Speakeasy” podcast, Acho shared his thoughts on Green’s legacy.
According to the ex-linebacker, whenever Green’s name comes up, his mind immediately goes to the fights and controversial incidents rather than the impact he has made as a basketball player.
“I wish Draymond Green is accomplished as he is would be known for anything besides being a fighter when it’s all said and done. Draymond’s a four-time champion. He’s one of the best defensive players of the generation. Hall of Famer… And yet when you think about Draymond Green, I can’t think about a basketball play…”
“But when I think about Draymond, I just think about fighting, and that is a disservice to as talented as Draymond Green is… Draymond Green’s reputation, I believe, has been completely undermined by fighting because his fighting speaks louder than his game,” Acho said on the podcast.
Acho also suggested that when people think about certain players, they usually remember their signature moves or memorable achievements.
“When I think about Steph [Curry], 60 points, 11 dribbles. When I think about Klay [Thompson], champion, Olympic game, Paris floater, Trey ball,” Acho added.
Acho appeared to mix up the examples: Thompson scored 60 points on just 11 dribbles in 2016, while Curry, not Thompson, delivered Team USA’s memorable late 3-point barrage in the 2024 Paris Olympic gold-medal game.
The Warriors picked Green in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft, 35th overall. He slowly became the heart of the team’s defense and won 4 championships with them in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. In 2016-17, he won Defensive Player of the Year, the first time anyone in franchise history had done it. He has also made four All-Star teams.
Still, as Acho pointed out, his name keeps bringing people back to the moments when he lost his cool, and the list is long. In the 2016 playoffs, he kicked Oklahoma City’s Steven Adams in the groin during the Western Conference Finals.
Later that postseason, he made contact with LeBron James’ groin in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The NBA assessed Green a Flagrant Foul 1 for the contact, giving him his fourth flagrant-foul point of the postseason and automatically suspending him for Game 5.
In 2018, he got into a heated on-court argument with then-teammate Kevin Durant, which led to a one-game team suspension. Before the 2022-23 season, Green punched teammate Jordan Poole in the face during practice.
Then, in November 2023, Green put Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert in a headlock during a scuffle and got a five-game suspension. Just weeks later, he struck Phoenix’s Jusuf Nurkić in the face, which led to an indefinite suspension that lasted 12 games.
There is no denying Green’s importance to the Warriors dynasty. However, Acho’s criticism highlights how repeated controversies can sometimes overshadow even the greatest accomplishments.
