Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has shed light on the objectives behind the club’s recent warm-weather training camp in Marbella, emphasizing the necessity of strengthening team relationships away from home. Speaking to Football London, the Italian tactician noted that while the squad has consistently worked well at their home training ground, exploring alternative methods to foster group cohesion remains essential during a challenging domestic campaign.
The primary motivation behind the mid-season trip extended beyond standard tactical drills, focusing heavily on interpersonal connections and collective bonding. De Zerbi stressed that modern football demands more than just a talented starting eleven, requiring deep-rooted relationships and a comprehensive understanding among teammates to transform good performances into winning results.
Despite Tottenham struggling to secure victories during the opening phase of the Premier League season, De Zerbi pointed out that the underlying quality of their performances has not been the core issue. Instead, the manager highlighted that the ultimate objective is finding every available avenue to improve match outcomes and build a resilient collective unit capable of navigating high-pressure situations.
“Yes, we worked well. Very well, but any way, we worked well in our training ground at home. I think when you have to improve and I think we have to improve in the result, not in the quality of the performances, but you have to find all ways to improve. All ways to be better, all ways to become a stronger group.”
Spending extended time together in a focused environment allows players to forge stronger personal and professional ties, which translates directly onto the pitch when matches grow intense. De Zerbi believes that building a cohesive team culture requires players to genuinely know one another inside and out, creating a unified group dynamic that goes far beyond standard tactical instructions.
“The players spend time together. They stay together a lot. I think to create something more than a normal first XI no? Now I think and I believe in football you need to create a group, you need the relationships, we need the connection and we need to know very well your teammates.”
As Tottenham prepare for their upcoming fixtures, the coaching staff will hope that the collective harmony fostered during the Marbella camp translates into clinical efficiency on the field. By uniting the squad and strengthening interpersonal connections, De Zerbi aims to provide the foundational resilience required to climb up the Premier League table and reward the supporters with consistent results.
