People seem to forget that Callum Osmand has only played a handful of matches in his professional career.
Celtic signed Osmand from Fulham last summer, when he had zero senior appearances to his name, before Martin O’Neill handed him his first-ever chance during his first spell in charge last season.
On Sunday, O’Neill handed Osmand his first start as Celtic slapped Hearts 7-1, with the versatile forward netting a brace, and then being taken off at half-time.
Despite Osmand missing his chance to get a hat-trick, he told Sky Sports that he was ‘okay’ with being taken off, and he looked at the positive side of it, and that’s the fact that he is building up his fitness.
Yang, Jota and others are all in contention too…
It won’t be too long before the champions of Scotland are back in action, because on Thursday night, Celtic host Celta Vigo in the Europa League.
Many supporters will be hoping Osmand is starting on the left, especially with Hyunjun Yang still injured, and Sebastian Tounekti not good enough to start.
Perhaps the Brendan Rodgers signing, who never earned a single minute under the former Celtic boss, won’t be able to play 90 minutes, but he is ready to start.
Osmand spoke about his fitness after being subbed off at the break, including how he can ‘build that up’ and, in the near future, ‘play a bit longer.’
Not only did Osmand suffer a long-term injury last season, but he was also out for periods during this campaign, and has never played 90 minutes in his senior career.
That’s why it’s even crazier that he is feeling so comfortable in such a pressured environment because many more experienced players suffer when under that spotlight.
“That was amazing, that was my first ever start, so it was a long time coming, so happy and I felt amazing out there,” said Osmand.
“The team’s performance was amazing. I can’t fault it. My first ten minutes were a bit ropey at the start; obviously, you grow into the game. I give my all every time I play. If I can bring something, then I will try to do that.
On never having the chance to score a hat-trick: “I was okay coming off. A little bit tired. Obviously, I haven’t played in a long time. 45 minutes against Benfica. 45 against Hearts, so I am happy with where I am at.
“Hopefully, build that up and I can play a bit longer. I am all good, and I felt good. I think it is about that (managing minutes). You don’t want to be too eager to go, and then you are out for longer.
“Yeah, I think it is just about managing it and building yourself up. In the game, you feel it’s a lot harder than anything else; as soon as you get those match minutes in, you can keep building up.”
