Oh Hyeon-gyu says he could cry if he scores against Celtic as the former Hoops striker prepares for an emotional return to Parkhead with Beşiktaş.
The South Korean has spoken warmly about the club ahead of Thursday’s Europa League meeting, while reflecting honestly on the difficulties he experienced during his spell in Glasgow.
Oh arrived from Suwon Samsung Bluewings in January 2023, joining Ange Postecoglou’s side as a young striker taking his first steps in European football.
There were goals and trophies, but establishing himself as a regular starter proved difficult. His opportunities became increasingly limited before he left for Genk in July 2024.
Now back with Beşiktaş, his affection for Celtic remains clear.
“I came here as a young boy with a dream,” He told the Herald
“It was sometimes hard for me, sometimes good for me. I have got good memories here. I always be grateful for everything and the fans.
“If I score, maybe I will cry.
“I learned a lot about my position from Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah.
“It was a hard time for me because I didn’t play a lot, sometimes I played, sometimes I did not.
“In my last season here, I didn’t play for the last six months so it was a hard time for me. But I’m very happy to be back here because I love Celtic so much. It has a special place in my heart.”
Oh’s career has taken him through Belgium and on to Turkey since leaving Glasgow, joining Thursday’s opponents in January 2026.
Thursday offers an opportunity to show his former supporters how much he has developed.
Celtic, meanwhile, need to ensure the reunion does not come at their expense. Beşiktaş arrive after surrendering a two-goal lead against Kasımpaşa, while the Hoops are looking for their first points of the league phase.
Oh should receive a warm welcome, but hopefully there will be no tears on Thursday.
