Following a disappointing Week 6, the Los Angeles Rams have fallen short of the championship expectations they carried into the NFL season. Their narrow loss to the Arizona Cardinals pushed them to a 2-4 record.
While many fans have nearly lost faith in the Rams, NFL legend Chad Johnson still believes Matthew Stafford’s team remains a Super Bowl favorite.
With Stafford leading an offense featuring Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, the Rams undoubtedly possess the talent to compete with the league’s best teams. However, having a roster filled with talented players does not automatically guarantee success, and the Rams are the best example of it.
On the latest episode of the “Nightcap” show, Johnson weighed in on why he is not ready to count the Rams out.
“Even with the turnovers and the penalties, you think about it as early as it is in the season… There are a few teams you can be blindfolded, and you can count on them being in the playoffs or being in that race,” Johnson said. “And the Rams are one of them.”
According to the Cincinnati Bengals legend, even teams with championship aspirations can experience difficult stretches, and one disappointing performance should not necessarily determine their entire season.
“Even though things aren’t going the way they like it, like (Sean) McVay said, you know the ups and downs and the flows of the NFL season. You’re gonna have games like this,” Johnson added.
“Even in games where you’re supposed to win against what most would consider your inferior opponent is the Arizona Cardinals. But still, any given Sunday, you can be beat no matter what. But when it matters most, the Rams will be in contention. They’ll be in contention.”
Myles Garrett’s arrival was expected to turn Los Angeles’ defensive line into one of the most fearsome units in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Rams acquired Trent McDuffie to bolster a secondary that needed another elite playmaker. Aaron Donald’s return from retirement added even more excitement.
However, those blockbuster moves came at a considerable cost. Los Angeles gave up significant draft capital to acquire McDuffie, while the deal for Garrett involved sending Jared Verse and future draft picks to Cleveland. The aggressive approach reflected the organization’s confidence that its star-studded roster had what it took to compete for another Super Bowl title.
Unfortunately, the early results have not matched those ambitions. Following their loss to Arizona, the Rams sit at the bottom of the NFC West with a 2-4 record.
Even more frustratingly, they lost to a Cardinals team that had entered the matchup after suffering four consecutive losses. The Rams now rank No. 14 in PFN’s NFL Offense Impact Rankings.
Despite their disappointing record, the Rams should not be completely written off just yet. Six games represent a significant portion of the regular season. However, there is still time for a talented roster to correct its mistakes and make a push toward the postseason.
