Hall of Famer Kurt Warner mixed up two Warrens in the broadcast booth on Sunday, even as the running back he kept misnaming had a big day.
Jaylen Warren ran 18 times for 101 yards and caught three passes for 36 more as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the New Orleans Saints 16-10 in Week 7 at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France. On NFL Network’s broadcast, though, Warner repeatedly called him by the first name of Indianapolis Colts tight end Tyler Warren.
Warner apologized the same day, but fans in his replies pushed back on his account of how many times it happened, offering higher counts of their own.
Warner called the game alongside Dave Pasch and Jason Kelce, and Jaylen Warren, who accounted for most of the Steelers’ 148 rushing yards, came up often. Tyler Warren spent Sunday with the Colts in Minneapolis, where they played the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium. The mix-up came on National Tight Ends Day, of all Sundays.
At one point, Warner praised the Steelers back’s work after the catch but used the wrong first name: “Not when you’ve got Tyler Warren on the field… Nobody better in the league at the running back spot of yards-after-catch than Tyler Warren.” His colleagues eventually corrected him.
Warner paired an explanation with an apology: “Haha, sorry, 1 play… had Tyler Warren 2 weeks ago and mentioned him in game, it carried over! I’m SORRY… forgive me!” That number would become the sticking point.
When one fan replied to him, Warner didn’t argue the point: “Yep, and it sucks when u mess that up! But sometimes u get another name in head & don’t even realize it, but my bad, I can own it!”
Warner’s apology didn’t settle the matter in his replies. The fan he answered had kept it short: “You had one job.”
Others took issue with the count itself. One fan offered a tally of their own: “2 times on 1 play and many more before that.”
Another fan put the number higher: “Kurt, you did it like 3 times at least.”
One more fan went beyond a recount: “Once is a mistake!! 4 times, you were just unprepared!!”
In another post, Warner offered a fuller apology, and this time he named the right Warren: “Yes, I called Jaylen Warren ‘Tyler’ today after calling Colts game & referencing him in today’s game… My bad, so sorry… It stinks as an announcer when you do that & unfortunately, it won’t be my last time bc sometimes you just react & misspeak! I own it… and Jaylen was awesome today, so hopefully I gave him enough love at other times!!”
Through Week 7, Jaylen Warren has 561 rushing yards, sixth in the NFL, and his 5.5 yards per carry rank second among 42 qualified rushers. He also has 344 yards after the catch, the part of his game Warner was praising on air.
Over the same span, Pro Football Network’s NFL RB Impact Grade rates him 82.4, sixth among 45 graded running backs.
Jaylen Warren and the Steelers, now 5-2 and behind the 5-2 Cleveland Browns on the AFC North tiebreaker, host Cleveland at Acrisure Stadium on Nov. 1. Tyler Warren and the 2-5 Colts visit the Jacksonville Jaguars the same day.
