Yaxel Lendeborg made his NBA debut on Wednesday facing one of the league’s toughest scorers, Luka Dončić.
The Golden State Warriors rookie did not back down, challenging the Los Angeles Lakers star both physically and verbally. But their season-opening matchup took a personal turn, and Lendeborg’s blunt comments afterward have made the exchange even more interesting.
With the Lakers leading 53-48 late in the second quarter, Lendeborg was putting heavy pressure on Dončić. The rookie was challenging the Lakers star across the court. But Dončić used a pump fake to draw a shooting foul, and the pair began exchanging words as the rookie headed to the bench.
Lendeborg continued challenging Dončić verbally and later revealed that he repeatedly told him, “You can’t score on me.”
The officials assessed Lendeborg a technical foul for the exchange. Dončić avoided a matching technical and later said he deliberately stayed quiet during that particular exchange to avoid getting one himself.
With the Lakers getting the final possession, the six-time NBA All-Star pulled up from beyond mid-court and launched a contested shot as the clock expired. The ball banked in, sending the Lakers star into celebration. Dončić laughed and pointed toward Lendeborg as he headed to the locker room.
The exchange did not end with the buzzer. After the game, Lendeborg explained that he had admired Dončić from watching his highlights, but his views have now changed.
“I had a lot of respect for him,” Lendeborg said. “But then being in there first hand, just watching all the whining and complaining, I lost all the respect, man. Me getting frustrated, it’s not about the foul being called. It’s about him complaining the entire game.”
The rookie also explained the words behind the technical foul, adding that he used profanity during their exchange.
Dončić offered a different account of the verbal battle, saying he tried to stay quiet to avoid picking up a technical foul himself. Warriors coach Steve Kerr praised Lendeborg’s competitiveness but called it a frustrating learning experience, while also questioning why only the rookie received a technical.
Lendeborg entered the NBA after winning the 2026 NCAA championship with Michigan and earning Big Ten Player of the Year honors. His first assignment was one of the league’s most dangerous scorers, and Dončić finished with 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists in the Lakers’ 127-105 win.
The 24-year-old scored 12 points on his debut, but the half-court shot and the comments that followed ensured their first meeting would be remembered for more than the final score.
