CAS sets late November date for Senegal appeal over awarding Africa Cup of Nations to Morocco

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The Court of Arbitration for Sport said on Monday that a ruling on Senegal’s appeal against a decision to award the Africa Cup of Nations to Morocco is expected by the end of November.

Senegal challenged a Confederation of African Football appeal ruling in March that shocked soccer by overturning a 1-0 victory on the field of play to a 3-0 win for Morocco by default.

Senegal beat AFCON host nation Morocco in the final in January after a 15-minute delay in play. Senegal’s team walked off the field to protest Morocco being awarded a penalty kick in the last minute of regulation time.

The referee eventually allowed the game to restart, Morocco’s penalty was saved and Senegal won with the only goal in extra time.

Soccer’s Laws of the Game state that the referee’s decisions are final.

A hearing took place behind closed doors at CAS headquarters in Lausanne on Oct. 8 and the CAS said a panel has begun its deliberations.

“The CAS arbitrators have decided to issue a complete ruling which includes legal grounds, known as a CAS Award,” it said. “This process will require several weeks, with the CAS Award expected at the end of November 2026.”
