Phillies’ Don Mattingly Makes Bryce Harper Decision After Disappointing Season

The Philadelphia Phillies have plenty of work to do offensively after the bats went quiet yet again down the stretch in this past season, but its defensive alignment will also be worth watching after several significant position changes during the 2026 campaign and with some key position players reaching free agency.

When the Phillies acquired star second baseman Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants ahead of the trade deadline, the team turned heads by moving franchise slugger Bryce Harper back to the outfield to accommodate sweeping alignment changes.

Alec Bohm moved to first base and Bryson Stott shifted to third, though Harper had not regularly played the outfield since 2021, making the adjustment particularly notable for a franchise cornerstone who had settled in at first base following an elbow surgery.

Now, re-signed manager Don Mattingly has offered a clearer indication of how Philadelphia intends to handle Harper’s defensive responsibilities moving forward, sending a notable message about the star slugger’s advancing age.

Philadelphia Phillies Send Bryce Harper ‘Age’ Message Ahead Of Role Change

Speaking from the Gold Glove Award ceremony this week, Mattingly explained that the Phillies intend to return the two-time National League MVP to first base while finding additional opportunities to use him as their designated hitter and ease his workload.

“The plan is basically that Bryce is going to play first base,” Mattingly told MLB Network. “We don’t feel like, at this age, he should be out in the outfield all the time… And actually get him more DH days.”

It’s still unclear just how much interest the Phillies have in bringing back Bohm or Arraez, who are free agents, or where they might seek additional lineup upgrades. But it seems safe to rule out any addition that would push Harper back into the outfield, as Mattingly seems to recognize his limits as he looks to stay healthy for another World Series push.

Philadelphia Phillies Need More Production Around Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber

The Phillies’ offensive struggles provide another reason for the organization to prioritize getting the most out of Harper and his most successful teammate, Kyle Schwarber.

“Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber combined for an 18.3 percent walk rate in 2026,” Matt Gelb noted for The Athletic. “All Phillies not named Harper or Schwarber walked at a 6.8 percent rate. The league average was 8.9 percent. Outside of Harper and Schwarber, the Other Phillies reached base at a .295 clip. It’s a jarring number; an optimist would suggest it’s hard to be worse in 2027.”

Getting more consistent production from the supporting cast will be essential if Philadelphia hopes to make another postseason run. Meanwhile, keeping Harper fresh and productive is clearly a top priority based on this past season.
