‘Have To Get Rid of Rome Odunze,’ ‘The Drops Gotta Stop’ — NFL World Reacts to Bears WR’s Major Mistake vs. Patriots on TNF

The Chicago Bears defeated the New England Patriots 30–24 on Thursday Night Football, but wide receiver Rome Odunze gave fans a frustrating moment in the red zone.

In the second quarter, Caleb Williams threw a pass toward the end zone, giving Odunze a chance to make a big play. However, the Bears receiver pushed off the defender before the ball arrived and then failed to catch it.

The Patriots declined the offensive pass interference penalty because the pass fell incomplete. As a result, Chicago had to settle for a field goal from Cairo Santos instead of a touchdown.

NFL World Reacts to Rome Odunze’s Glaring Drop

Odunze’s latest mistake reminded fans of the Bears’ Week 3 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. In that matchup, the former ninth overall pick dropped a pass from Case Keenum that could have resulted in an easy touchdown in the back of the end zone.

With another red-zone opportunity ending in disappointment, fans and analysts were quick to share their reactions.

Analyst Marcus Mosher expressed his frustration with a short message, writing, “Rome. Come on.”

Davis Mattek also took a dig at Odunze, saying, “Offensive pass interference into dropped touchdown is the Rome Odunze special.”

Jeff Mueller pointed out that this was the second time Odunze had struggled to make a touchdown catch this season.

“Rome Odunze commits OPI and can’t come down with the catch… 2nd time this season he’s done this in the end zone,” Mueller wrote.

NFL writer Pete Martuneac took his criticism further, saying, “We have to get rid of Rome Odunze, man.”

Another fan poked fun at Odunze by sharing a meme of Warriors star Draymond Green struggling with a reaction-time test, saying, “Rome Odunze when you ask him to catch a pass in the end zone.”

The SleeperBears channel also reacted with a Michael Scott meme from The Office, captioned “This is the Worst.”

Other fans were equally unhappy with the play. One commenter wrote, “Rome Odunze gotta go. He can’t even catch a ball when he pushes the DB away.”

Despite the frustrating red-zone mistake, Odunze made an important contribution later in the game.

In the fourth quarter, he caught a 21-yard pass from Williams on third-and-9, helping the Bears keep their offense moving as they worked toward a 30-24 victory.

Odunze finished the night with four receptions for 69 yards on five targets. The wide receiver currently holds a 71.4 PFN NFL Impact Rating, ranking 65th among wide receivers, though that rating’s bound to change after this game.
