Shadab Khan made a heroic 113no off 96 balls as Pakistan put on an incredible 89-run last-wicket stand to complete an unfathomable one-wicket victory in Lahore, consigning England to the brink of elimination from contention for the ODI tri-series final.
Ben Duckett made an impressive 105 off 111 for his third ODI century, but his innings was the lone bright spot in an otherwise disappointing batting performance from England, who were limited to a below-par total of 241 all out after 46.4 overs thanks in large part to the impressive bowling of Shaheen Shah Afridi (4-46).
England's bowlers then decimated Pakistan's top order with Jamie Overton (3-43) impressive and Liam Dawson (2-19) relentless, as the hosts slipped to 154-9 having been 74-3.
All hope appeared lost for Pakistan with one wicket remaining, but Shadab - alongside the impenetrable No 11 Haris Rauf (7no off 19) - notched his career-best ODI score and his maiden century to guide his side to a victory made even more dramatic by a successful DRS review when Shadab was given out lbw to Atkinson on 97.
Shadab and Rauf's partnership was the highest last-wicket stand in a successful run chase in ODI history, and secured Pakistan's place in the tri-series final.
The win is England's second heartbreaking defeat in a row - after Sri Lanka recorded the second-highest successful run chase In ODI history against them on Thursday - and means that England must win against Sri Lanka to have any chance of a place in the final, with their last group-stage match live on Sky Sports from 7:30am on Thursday.
