Michael Scott Michael, aka LoneStar249, has been a writer for Bavarian Football Works since 2023. When he is not playing the role of Gameday Manager on weekdays, he is busy watching American football, basketball, tennis, or any sport on television. He is an avid fiction reader of the science fiction and mystery thriller genres but his favorite hobby (besides sports) is Legos.
Bayern Munich’s undefeated season was extended on Wednesday night with a 6-1 win over FC Magdeburg in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Against the second-division opponent, Bayern opted to play without key players like Harry Kane, Dayot Upamecano, and Joshua Kimmich. Fortunately, Michael Olise and his teammates defended their home turf.
In his postgame press conference (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern assistant manager Aaron Danks explained his decision to rest Harry Kane.
“It wasn’t just for Dortmund and Madrid,” said Danks. “When you look back at Harry’s minutes, he played every game for England in the last international break, so it’s been a long time since we hadthe opportunity to take him out of a game. I had a conversation with him, when he returned from the Ballon d’Or ceremony, about him resting this one out, but he was ready and prepared if we needed him. We have to trust the whole squad and show belief in everybody. And I thought they stepped up well and took their chance tonight, so we’re really pleased.”
Kane will surely return in this weekend’s Der Klassiker against second-place Borussia Dortmund. Olise’s braceagainst Magdeburg pushed him ahead of Kane in goals this season, but it feels like that will be a short-lived endeavor, as Kane has claimed the Bundesliga Golden Boot in all three seasons at Bayern.
