Michael Carrick has been facing increasingly uncertain future at Manchester United after a disastrous start to the season, despite guiding the club to third place in the Premier League last term.
The former midfielder initially brought stability to Old Trafford after replacing Ruben Amorim in January. However, that optimism has rapidly disappeared.
United have won just two of their opening 12 competitive matches this season.
Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth extended their winless run to eight games. It followed Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League thrashing against Como.
The atmosphere at Old Trafford has become increasingly toxic. Supporters voiced their frustration after Bournemouth’s victory, while Carrick’s future dominated the discussion.
United’s hierarchy had already started considering replacements before Sunday’s defeat.
Director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada now face a major decision, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among the leading candidates.
Many expected Carrick to lose his job on Monday. However, the club have yet to announce his dismissal.
In fact, Carrick is expected to watch an Under-21 friendly against Hull City at Carrington as discussions continue.
Nevertheless, a departure has now emerged from within Manchester United, with a member of the club’s coaching staff confirming his exit.
Manchester United academy coach Mike Goulden has officially announced his departure after four years at the club.
Goulden, who joined United in September 2022 as an Academy PDP Athletic Development Coach, confirmed the news on LinkedIn.
“An incredible 4 years […] thank you for the opportunity Matt Walker,” he wrote.
Head of Academy Performance Matt Walker also paid tribute to Goulden, describing him as one of his finest appointments.
Walker praised his enthusiasm, expertise and commitment to preparing young players for professional football.
Before joining United, Goulden worked at Liverpool, Burnley and Bournemouth, gaining experience across academy development and first-team performance.
His departure ends a four-year spell focused on helping United’s emerging talents develop physically and prepare for senior football.
There is no indication that Goulden’s exit relates to Carrick’s uncertain future or the potential restructuring of the first-team coaching staff.
