Big Ten Week 7 recap: Final scores, highlights, updated standings

Here is a quick rundown of everything that happened in the Big Ten in week 7.

College football always seems to have a chaotic Saturday across the nation that will shake up the season in the blink of an eye. Week 7 was just that in the Big Ten and beyond from the early afternoon until late hours of the night. The rankings will have a fresh look after seeing five top-10 teams take a loss this week, including No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Notre Dame. If Indiana had to pick a week to lose a close game to Ohio State, this may have been the perfect week to do so, as the losses around the top-10 should help provide some cushion for a soft landing in the re-worked rankings this week. And the losses around the nation should bode well for UCLA, which is now the final undefeated team overall in the Big Ten (and SEC, for what it is worth).

Here is a look at everything that went down around the Big Ten in Week 7. Rankings referenced are from the latest US LBM Coaches Poll leading into Week 7.

No. 4 Indiana vs. No. 5 Ohio State 19, No. 4 Indiana 15

Indiana's 22-game winning streak has come to an end in the game of the year on the Big Ten schedule. Ohio State won a low-scoring battle in a rematch of last season's Big Ten championship game. Ohio State comes away with a win, but it is a costly one for the Buckeyes. Quarterback Julian Sayin injured his right arm in the game and was seen on the sidelines in a sling in the second half. He will reportedly be out for several weeks. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, Sayin was able to connect with Jeremiah Smith for a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to extend the Ohio State lead enough to keep the Hoosiers at bay.

Indiana nearly pulled out the win with a last-ditch effort from Josh Hoover to Nick Marsh with 1:02 to play in the game, but Marsh had a foot out of bounds on what would have been a late go-ahead touchdown for the Hoosiers. This game set the tone for what turned out to be a wild day for top-10 teams around the nation, and Ohio State may once again be closing in on the nation's top spot in the polls once again.

No. 12 UCLA 17, Wisconsin 7

Just as everyone predicted before the start of the season, UCLA is the last remaining undefeated team standing in the Big Ten. Despite not having starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava and a low-producing night from Big Ten-leading rusher Wayne Knight, the Bruins did just enough to hold off Wisconsin in a primetime matchup in Pasadena. Ty Dieffenbach delivered 264 passing yards in his backup-turned-starting quarterback role for the Bruins, who should be climbing into the top 10 of the national rankings ahead of Week 8. UCLA held Wisconsin to just 214 yards of offense, including just 66 from Badgers quarterback Colton Joseph. UCLA had two turnovers but managed to hold the football for 37 minutes of game time while Wisconsin was just 3-of-10 on third downs.

No. 25 Oregon 17, Nebraska 14

Nebraska once again showed it is a program heading in a positive direction but still in need of learning how to close out potential wins. Nebraska entered the fourth quarter in Autzen Stadium late on Saturday night with a 14-6 lead on Oregon, but the Ducks outscored the Huskers 11-0 in the fourth quarter for a hard-fought and low-scoring victory. And who else but former Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola to come in and save the day for the Ducks? Raiola, who was previously benched in favor of Brock Thomas following an injury to Dante Moore, was the one being called off the bench to relieve a struggling Thomas in the fourth quarter. Railoa was ready for the moment, completing 11 of 18 passes for 59 yards in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning touchdown with 28 seconds remaining in the game. Talk about a dramatic finish.

Michigan 21, Penn State 18

Penn State led Michigan 3-0 at halftime with two interceptions against Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood. That led Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham to pull the trigger on a change at quarterback at the start of the second half. Tommy Carr stepped in to lead the Wolverines offense, but the story of the second half was the play of Penn State's Rocco Becht. Becht was intercepted twice in the third quarter and fumbled away the football in the fourth quarter, leading to three Michigan touchdowns. Becht's turnovers led to some postgame questions about his job security as the starter, but Matt Campbell said that is not something he is considering at this time after Penn State dropped its fourth consecutive game.
