Christian Watson has dealt with injury problems throughout most of his career, but when on the field, he’s one of the most dynamic receiving threats in the NFC. He’s stayed healthy recently, but left Thursday Night Football in an ambulance to get checked out for a potential chest injury after reeling in a deep ball from Jordan Love. Fans reacted to the unfortunate injury by supporting Watson.
Watson streaked down the field and caught a 53-yard pass that left him down on the ground alongside Panthers rookie CB Will Lee III.
Both Lee and Watson left the game shaken up, and Watson walked off the field under his own power into the locker room, ruling out a leg injury. But Watson was seen shortly after entering an ambulance to get testing on his chest.
Packers fans expressed concern about Watson’s status and wished him well.
“Hope he’s alright!” said one fan.
Watson suffered a chest injury against the Denver Broncos last season and played the following week, and Packers fans are hoping for a similar outcome this time.
After halftime, the broadcast reported that Watson had completed his precautionary testing at a local hospital and was returning to Lambeau Field. At the time of writing, however, he was still officially listed as questionable to return, leaving open the possibility that he could rejoin the Packers if cleared.
“Christian Watson being taken to the hospital for precautionary testing, per the team. Something similar happened in Denver last year and he played the next week,” said Packers writer Matt Schneidman.
“Almost identical to last year at Denver. Hopefully similar outcome and won’t miss time,” said one fan.
Packers fans were frustrated with Watson’s injury because it’s not the only offensive injury they’ve faced this year. Their offensive line is battered, and Jayden Reed suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2. Now, Watson joins the list of injured offensive stars, and the defensive injuries aren’t any better. LB Edgerrin Cooper tore his Achilles a couple of weeks ago, and star Micah Parsons still hasn’t featured yet for Green Bay.
“How do we lose somebody or more every week it’s getting tiring,” said one fan.
“Can it get any worse?” added another fan.
Losing Watson is brutal for the Packers, and will only sting if he’s out beyond the rest of the game tonight. He’s their best receiver and ranks 6th in PFN’s WR Impact Metric.
Matthew Golden has been awesome for Green Bay this year, though, and will have big shoes to fill in Watson’s absence. He’s already found the end zone after Watson left the game, but has dealt with drop issues and has two tonight in the first half.
While Packers fans were disappointed in the injury, some took shots at Watson’s inability to stay consistently healthy.
“Christian Watson stay healthy challenge.. IMPOSSIBLE,” said one fan.
“The guy is a great receiver but he’s made out of glass. Always hurt,” said one fan.
Green Bay is up two possessions at halftime, but the Panthers are getting the ball out of half. If the Packers can get some early stops in the second half, they might be able to get out of this game without risking re-injury to Watson, if he is cleared to return somehow.
Otherwise, it’ll be a heavy dose of Golden and a hopefully improved running game with Josh Jacobs as the Packers look to move to 5-3.
