College football turned on its head as Georgia and Texas break unwanted 36-year record and No 1 team falls in dramatic circumstances

College football was plunged into pure mayhem on Saturday afternoon as a number of top-ranked teams suffered major upsets.

No. 1 ranked side Georgia collapsed in stunning fashion against unranked rival Auburn, following a fourth quarter comeback from the Tigers to seal a 27-24 win.

The shocking result leaves the Southeastern Conference (SEC) without a single undefeated program heading into late October.

The Bulldogs’ defeat marked the second straight week that the nation’s top-ranked squad was brought down by an unranked opponent, after Texas were stunned by the Oklahoma Sooners last weekend.

It represents the first time since 1990 that No. 1 teams have fallen to unranked foes in back-to-back weeks, matching a 36-year record.

And things didn't get any better for the Longhorns this week, as they once again fell to defeat against an unranked opponent, losing 27-24 to the Florida Gators.

Elsewhere, No. 6 ranked Alabama were on the receiving end of a major upset as they fell to a 26-10 defeat to Tennessee.

The shock result marked the first time since 2013 that the Crimson Tide have suffered back-to-back defeats.

It also means that Georgia, Alabama and Texas all fell to defeat on the same day for the first time since October 1996.

Georgia entered the weekend as the SEC's sole surviving unbeaten juggernaut following a gritty road victory over Alabama.

Kirby Smart’s side appeared primed to solidify their dominance over their bitter Deep South rivals on Saturday afternoon.

Instead, the Tigers stunned Sanford Stadium by dictating the trenches and edging out the Bulldogs in a frantic, down-to-the-wire finish - sealing the win with a walk-off field goal from kicker Alex McPherson.

The stunning upset hands Georgia its first home defeat in years and completely scrambles the conference title picture.
