India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the first T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22, 2026. Chasing New Zealand's total of 226, India reached 230 for six in 19.4 overs to secure the victory. The win was built on contributions from multiple batters, with Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel all playing handy innings.
Naman Dhir's finishing performance proved decisive in the chase. The young batter scored 42 not out off just 15 balls, striking five fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 280. Dhir sealed the win by hitting a top-edged six over the wicketkeeper off Matt Henry in the final over.
Wasim Jaffer, the former India opener, was impressed by Dhir's ability to deliver under pressure in a high-scoring encounter. Jaffer recognised that Dhir's match-winning performance at the start of his T20I career would significantly boost his confidence moving forward. The veteran commentator highlighted Dhir's value as a complete cricketer in the modern T20I format.
"Naman Dhir's knock was special. Winning the match for the team with such a knock at the start of your career boosts confidence a lot. He is a good addition to the T20I team. You need a power-hitter who can also bowl two to three overs in the middle. He is also a good fielder," Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
Jaffer highlighted Dhir's dual value as both a batter and bowler in the middle overs. The former India opener noted that modern T20I cricket demands versatility and balance in squad composition. Jaffer explained that Dhir's ability to hit sixes and contribute with the ball made him a valuable asset, despite occasional soft dismissals early in his career.
"The way batting is happening nowadays, everyone has a bad day. If you have some options, you can rotate the bowlers and not become too predictable. So, in that sense, Naman Dhir gives you a bit of balance. Rinku Singh is also a very good fielder," Jaffer said.
"It would be useless to talk about the batting, as Rinku is outstanding. Rinku Singh is a better finisher than Nitish Reddy, but Naman Dhir has the capacity to hit sixes. Yes, he sometimes gets out with soft dismissals, but he has the capability to win matches by playing such knocks," he added.
Jaffer made a strong case for Rinku Singh's continued inclusion in India's T20I setup. The former batter felt that Singh's proven track record of match-winning performances warranted a permanent spot in the squad. Jaffer expressed disappointment that the Uttar Pradesh batter had not been able to secure a regular place in the 15-member team despite his consistent contributions.
"I still feel Rinku Singh should be in the team. He has proven himself time and again. He has performed and won matches for India. It's unfortunate that he is not able to find a place in the 15," Jaffer said.
